The Open Door Edinburgh

The Open Door provides a focus for older people and those with mental health problems who live in this locality. We provide caring support for older people, a friendly meeting place for those who are isolated or lonely, rehabilitation opportunities for people experiencing mental health problems, support for families and friends who care for people with dementia, and information about other services.


Current opportunities

The Open Door needs you to help us create an atmosphere of care, love and laughter in our day care services for older people (80 years plus) including people living with dementia. You will support our members to participate in a fun programme of mulit-sensory activities from arts and crafts to quizzes, seated swing dancing to indoor bowls, poetry readings to sing-a-long sessions. You will also help serve hot drinks and meals to our members and share a freshly cooked lunch with them.

We are a friendly charity that is looking for help within our café. Our café offers hot and cold light bites and refreshments for the local community. Serving customers in a pleasant and courteous manner, Cleaning the kitchen, café area and café toilets in accordance with Health and Safety Regulations and Guidance, Keeping cleaning and temperature records, Undertaking the preparation of the food and beverages served in the café, Clearing tables, Washing up.

Jobs would include helping serve lunch, helping with activities and supporting staff in the day care room. This is a fun relaxed group with between 15-20 men visiting it each week.

The role involves supporting staff who facilitate a senior mens group in a day service. This would involve making hot drinks, offering the men sandwiches and snacks, clearing cups and plates, washing dishes, loading the sanitiser, ensuring rooms are cleaned and returned to usual set up . It would also involve sitting in for the talks we welcome from visiting speakers. Interaction with the men is welcome, they like to engage in conversation.
