Positive Help offers practical help to people affected by HIV and/or Hepatitis C in Edinburgh and the Lothians. The four core services are delivered by a team of trained volunteers. The services provided include: Befriending for children and young people; Home Support (cleaning, de-cluttering, painting, DIY, gardening, and other domestic tasks); a free Transport service, which helps people to get to and from medical appointments as well as support groups or local supermarkets; and Study Buddies, a homework mentoring service for children.

Current opportunities

Positive Helps's home support servive makes a very direct impact on quality of life for those affected by the symptoms of HIV or Hep C and the often debilitating side effects of combination drugs therapies. With home support our client's quality of life can be transformed on a day to day basis, for example providing them with a clean comfortable home. Positive Help offers home support on both a regular and a one-off basis.

The Supportive Shopping Service offers assistance with shopping to people who are living with HIV and/or Hepatitis C. Our clients often struggle to manage to get their shopping independently due to poor physical/mental health, limited mobility, social anxiety or literacy issues.

As a befriender you will build a relationship with a child or a young person who is affected by HIV and/or Hepatitis C. You will meet fortnightly for 3-5 hours to spend one-on-one time together. Together you will come up with fun activities you can do during the befriending sessions, such as visiting art galleries or kayaking. You will usually also share a meal together. Our Children’s Services require a minimum commitment of 1 year.
