The local Charity is a member of Relationships Scotland, the leading provider of family mediation, counselling and child contact services across Scotland. Recognising the often devastating, and far reaching impact broken relationships and family conflict has on all concerned, the Organisation offers specialist family support services to children, young people, parents and other family members to help them overcome relationship breakdown, family conflict or parental separation/divorce. This includes the provision of counselling/therapies, family mediation, child contact services and other support tailored to individual circumstances and needs. Our work enables family members to resolve their conflict and relationship difficulties and to improve communication, positively impacting upon the resilience, well-being and future prospects of all concerned, particularly the children. We know that conflict in the household and relationship issues greatly impact on our own health and well-being, our performance at work, and our social support networks just to name a few. It is also evidenced that children’s behaviour, educational attainment and mental health suffers as a consequence, and they will be more likely to engage in high risk taking behaviours such as substance misuse, teenage pregnancy, truancy, and juvenile delinquency. Research shows that parental separation is one of ten key Adverse Childhood Experiences (or ACEs) that are strong predictors of serious and prolonged physical health issues in adulthood. Referrals can be made via our website, over the telephone, in writing or in person. We accept self- or agency referrals.

Current opportunity

Child Contact Centres play a key role in helping children affected by family breakdown to maintain relationships with the parent they do not live with or other family members. The volunteer works with the Organiser and other volunteers to provide a welcoming, friendly atmosphere for the families using the centre by: • helping out with difficult ‘handovers’ and complex contact arrangements as advised by the Organiser • being involved with both parents and children in order to make them feel at ease (this does not involve counselling or expressing and opinion) • ensuring the availability of suitable play equipment and materials • providing tea and coffee.
