Orkney Library and Archive

Orkney Library & Archive provides a wide range of services, many of them free of charge. We welcome everybody, whether a resident of Orkney or visitor and provide free internet access on our computers or free WiFi connection if you would rather use your own device. Orkney Archive is housed within the main building in Kirkwall and is the place to go if you want to learn about the history and culture of Orkney.

Current opportunities

We are looking for volunteers to help in the delivery of workshops and learning sessions within the new Lend & Mend Hub in the library. We have training providers already established but would like volunteers to assist and potentially have routine times when people can come into the library to learn more about using the sewing machines, mending, and upcycling. Key activities · Providing assistance to members of the public at workshops and drop in sessions · Provide basic inductions to the Lend & Mend Hub · Using initiative to problem solve and answer questions This is a great chance to increased your knowledge of the circular economy, develop new skills and enjoy social interaction with like minded people.

The Orkney Library and Archive in Kirkwall are looking to start a Seed Library and are looking for volunteers who know about cultivating/drying seeds and would be keen to get involved. The main duties will be to: Liaise with library staff to help get the seed library up and running and organised; Helping to write instructions to guide people on what to do and when; Keeping a check on the seed stock, seed health and the presentation of seeds; Helping to prepare seed packets, labelling and display in the library; Assisting with seed library events in the future.
