Charity registered in Scotland SC037738

The British Red Cross helps people in crisis, whoever and wherever they are. We are part of a global voluntary network, responding to conflicts, natural disasters and individual emergencies. We help vulnerable people in the UK and abroad prepare for, withstand and recover from emergencies in their own communities.

Current opportunities

Loneliness can have a devastating impact on people’s health and wellbeing. British Red Cross volunteers are here to help people know that they are not alone and to reconnect with their community. If you are compassionate, like helping and meeting people then this could be the role for you.

1 in 5 people in the UK say they are lonely. Volunteers like you help people to gain confidence so that they can reconnect with their local community. Give companionship to people in their home or in the community. Help people to build confidence and self-esteem. Support people with everyday tasks such as shopping or doctor appointments. Help people to use local community services and social groups. Keep records of tasks.

For people leaving hospital, adjusting to life at home can be a difficult time. Helping someone get their essential shopping, pick up their prescription or get the heating turned on can make all the difference for them to feel safe at home. Visit people in hospital as they are getting ready to go home. Bring people home from hospital. Help someone settle in when they first arrive home. Support with shopping and collecting prescriptions. Help people find further support if they need it. Keep records of tasks.
