Current opportunities

This is an opportunity to improve the community’s access to fresh food, reducing food waste and food poverty. Volunteers collect food donations from supermarkets and ensure that the food is delivered to be redistributed to the community. The Community Food Volunteer is supported by the Burnfoot Grows Together Project which is a climate challenge fund project aimed at reducing the environmental impact of people’s food choices. Part of this project has been to set up a community food stand which redistributes food waste from the supermarkets for community use. The role can involves picking up food donations from donors primarily but could also include sorting food waste and ensuring that all food is of a reasonable quality and fit to eat. Volunteers liaise with staff on when, and where food donations get collected. Food donations are recorded daily then sorted by yourself or another volunteer. Volunteers are welcome to take part in the other activities that the project provides including our community lunches on Thursdays. Come and be part of an active community, meet new people and help the environment.

This is an opportunity to get involved with a vibrant community based organisation in Burnfoot, developing a community garden, producing local food and reducing food waste. Come and be part of a social group, have fun, build community and help the environment. You can be involved with all stages of growing food, harvesting and developing the site and activities. This is an opportunity to get involved in all aspects of gardening, producing food from seed to plate. There are also maintenance tasks such as weeding and watering and small joinery tasks such as building bug homes. We have large raised beds and have a large polytunnel to support our growing and workshops. There is an opportunity to come and learn at the food growing or cooking workshops or be there as a support for the workshops. We work with many different groups from parents and tots to intergenerational groups. This is a great opportunity to learn/teach how to garden, spend time outside, meet new people. Our main volunteer day is a Thursday but other times may be available. There are tasks suited to all ages and abilities and you can volunteer as and when you have the time. All activities will be supported by the Growing Officer.
