early intervention from Primary 6 to enable child to achieve fullest potential through mentoring and identifying specific needs for child or family. Recognised as HMIE as best practise.

Current opportunities

Children are identified by teachers in P6 as at risk of disengaging in school through low self-esteem/confidence. A programme of 8 weeks run during school time, leaders paired with child to do a project. They then go on to 1:1 mentor through the remainder of primary school and into high school. Volunteer maintains contact with family. Co-ordinator builds picture from school to identify specific areas of concern.

PYT provides mentors for children and young people, but mentoring you can have a real impact on a young persons life, helping them achieve their full potential. We work with local primary schools to identify young people who would benefit for working with a mentor. These are kids who are at risk of social isolation, mental health issues and may find the transition to High School more difficult than their peers. They are the kids who never raise their hands, have difficulty making friends and struggle to integrate socially. By working with a mentor we help them to build self-esteem and confidence, and develop strategies for dealing with the challenges that they face. We give our mentors full training and support them throughout the mentoring relationship. Our mentors work with the children from Primary 6 through to the end of S1.
