Caledonia Housing Association (Dundee)
Caledonia Housing Association provides sustainable homes and a range of services for its tenants. The majority of its tenants are older people, from retirement age up. The volunteer programme is designed to support services for older people or those disadvantaged through disability or ill-health, living in the Dundee area.
This is a fantastic opportunity to use your computer skills and develop a fun, friendly social group in a Supported Housing Scheme.
Caledonia Housing Association is supporting interesting and stimulating social activities for older residents that will link them into the wider community.
Small groups or one to one, looking for support to receive and send information; browse the web; and possibly develop other methods including skype etc. This will be very much a social group and the ability to encourage social interaction will be as important as computer skills. If you have computer skills; a friendly personality; and can spare 2 hours a week / fortnight, we would love to hear from you.
Caledonia HA has 8 Sheltered Schemes across Dundee providing accommodation for older people. Each Housing Scheme is a small community. We are recruiting friendly, sociable and creative volunteers to organise group activities for older people. These are small groups of older people, usually between 4 and 12, who want fun, stimulating activities in a social setting.
The types of groups that are popular include: coffee mornings; afternoon teas; reminiscing groups; sing-alongs / live music; Tai Chi; seated exercise class; beauty therapies; listening to guest speakers, Art & Crafts and the list goes on.
Can you organise a small group? get the conversation going? have skills that would interest older people? A creative mind and a ‘can do’ attitude? Then why not give this a go. YOU’LL ENJOY IT !
This is a wonderful opportunity to support ‘older people’ by becoming a short-term Buddy or Companion. Caledonia Housing Association is putting together a list of volunteers who can be contacted to enable older people to attend meetings, appointments or social events throughout Dundee. The volunteer will agree to be a companion, escorting the older person to the activity and supporting them during the activity. It may be a hospital visit, shopping, opticians, visit a place of interest or family member. For most of us, going out and about is a daily occurrence that we take for granted. However, for a number of older people this can be a worrying experience causing unnecessary stress and heightening the feeling of isolation.
Can you spare time once a week, fortnight or month? Use your car or help someone use public transport? Be a companion? Then get in touch and make a difference!
A good befriending relationship can be as beneficial for the befriender and the befriendee. It is the need of everyone to have company and companionship in our life. If you can spare 2 hours per week to be a volunteer Companion/befriender, supporting older people in Dundee then please read on. There are many older people with limited family support, wanting social contact. This could be someone to talk to; share a joke or gossip with; share hobbies or interests; go for a walk; visit a local café.
We are looking for volunteers, both male and female, who are friendly and tolerant with good communication skills and the ability to listen to others. A creative person who can come up with interesting ideas to overcome barriers, for example physical disability, reduced verbal communication skills, or the onset of dementia.
Make a difference to somebodies life.
