The Unicorn Preservation Society is a charity registered in Scotland who preserve and conserve HMS Unicorn, the most original old ship in the world.

The purpose of the organisation is to ensure a sustainable future for the vessel, provide education relating to the ship and maritime heritage, and to provide recreational facilities for the community.


Current opportunities

As a member of the HMS Unicorn Collections Team, you will provide an invaluable role in improving knowledge associated with the collections and fostering their accessibility. This role provides an opportunity to get experience within a museum environment and to learn about collections management, care, and storage. You will also get the chance to learn how to use Axiell Collections Management Systems. As part of this role, you will be provided with ongoing training opportunities and will develop an excellent attention to detail, good organisational and communication skills, and computer literacy. As a member of the HMS Unicorn volunteer team, you will also get the chance to meet other people and be invited to different group social events throughout the year. You can also become involved in other areas of the ship's life including maintenance, engagement events, and visitor services.

As a member of the HMS Unicorn Maintenance Team, you will be crucial to the ongoing preservation of one of the world's oldest ships. Not only will you help with the upkeep of the vessel, but you will develop knowledge of the vessel and gain experience in a range of practical skills, all of which are transferrable to other areas of work. Reporting to the ship's maintenance officer, you will receive training to undertake a variety of tasks onboard while adhering to health & safety policies and correct use of PPE. You will get the chance to use different hand tools and build confidence with practical skills and DIY, as well as contribute to the overall appearance and cleanliness of the vessel. As a member of the HMS Unicorn volunteer team, you will also get the chance to meet other people and be invited to different group social events.

As a member of the HMS Unicorn Visitor Services Team, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring that every visitor enjoys a wonderful experience on board. From helping in the front of house to providing guided tours of the ship, our visitor service volunteers get to learn about all aspects of the visitor experience within a heritage attraction. This role provides an opportunity to develop real-life customer service and communication skills, as well as the chance to meet other people and become part of a positive and hard working team. Ongoing customer service training is provided to all our visitor services volunteers as well as basic retail and housekeeping training. As a member of the HMS Unicorn volunteer team, you will also be invited to different group social events throughout the year and can become involved in other areas of the ship's life including maintenance, learning, and engagement events.
