Leisure and Culture Dundee

The projects main philosophy has been to create opportunities for children and young people from Dundee’s most deprived areas to participate in physical activity and sport, along with using sport as a tool to raise attainment levels, increase employability prospects and reduce anti-social behaviour levels. The team delivers 6 main programmes; Participation Programme, Diversionary Programme, Learn Thru Sport Programme, Springboard Programme, Volunteer Development Programme and Holiday Programme.

Current opportunities

There are many and varied reasons that volunteers are an asset to the aquatics programme and we aim to make it as inclusive as possible. Many children with additional support needs can cope with mainstream swimming lessons with additional support, either in-water or on poolside Disability swim classes benefit from extra support and a volunteer can make a great difference to the progress these children can make. Some children, particularly pre-school children, have never been in a swimming pool and volunteers can make a huge difference by helping alleviate their fears.

The Sports Development Team has priority sports to develop across the city. These priority sports are currently athletics, football, gymnastics, netball, tennis and trampolining. The team deliver term-time classes across the city in Leisure & Culture Dundee facilities (DISC, Douglas Sports Centre, Grove Swim & Sport, Harris Swim & Sport, Lynch Sports Centre, St Paul’s Swim & Sport) as well as at community centres and schools. There are also holiday programmes and events throughout the year. Volunteers can participate in programmes as assistant coaches, working alongside qualified coaches and receiving support from sports development officers. By providing volunteering opportunities within these programmes, the Sports Development Team aim to provide experience, development opportunities and increase employability.

You don’t need to be a sports enthusiast to volunteer and support your local Community Sports Hub. The West End CSH are seeking a confident individual to support sports clubs in the West End with admin duties as Hub Secretary. The Hub Secretary will work with community leaders from 5 local sports clubs to support the development of further sporting opportunities in the community. We are looking for an individual to take minutes at monthly hub meetings, deal promptly with any correspondence on the hub’s behalf and act as the main admin officer for the hub. The role gives an individual the opportunity to put their skills to good use to assist other volunteers as part of a community group, feel useful, create new relationships, build new skills and make an impact in supporting local sport. You will be a valued member of the team.
