Want to be involved in your local community getting people active? We are looking for people to lead health walks as part of the Walk Aberdeen programme. Full training is provided in the form of a one day fully recognised walk leader training course. On completion of this the volunteer will have the opportunity to support or lead walking groups in your local community, encouraging others to get active and enjoy some social exercise. This position is a great opportunity to be active in your local area. Full support is available to assist you taking on this role and gradually build the confidence to be a walk leader. *Active Schools Aberdeen on the lookout for new volunteers to boost local children’s involvement in sport* Sport Aberdeen’s Active Schools team is seeking new volunteers who are eager to play an important role in improving the health and wellbeing of Aberdeen’s young people. The invitation to volunteer extends to anyone over the age of 13 with an interest in sport and a desire to give back to the local community, who is inspired to help young people. Secondary school pupils who opt to volunteer will be accompanied by an adult when helping to deliver sessions. A sportscotland national initiative that aims to provide all children with high quality opportunities to take part in sport and physical activity, Active Schools is delivered in Aberdeen by award-winning charity Sport Aberdeen. The team engages with all local authority primary and secondary schools across the city, with a responsibility to encourage young people to participate in free physical activity sessions and join extracurricular sports clubs. Prior to Covid-19, a notable 89% of Active Schools activities were carried out by volunteers including parents, teachers, students, secondary school pupils and family members. The 2018 to 2019 school academic year saw 891 volunteer deliverers, with some 9588 pupils attending sessions. Eilidh Shanks, former Active Schools volunteer during secondary school, said: “I really enjoyed volunteering for Active Schools. I was involved in helping at netball clubs, holiday activity camps and fun runs. I loved that I got to work with kids of all ages, encouraging them to take part in sport. It was rewarding to see the kids enjoying themselves and improving each week.” Volunteering can also help to shape a career in sport. Rory Anton, former Active Schools volunteer, commented: “During my time volunteer coaching for Active Schools, it really helped me see the power of sport for young people and allowed me as a young coach to develop my leadership capabilities. There are definitely aspects of my job as a Club Development Officer at RGU SPORT supporting the development of our Student Leaders that I couldn’t do without the experience of leading so many sessions for Active Schools.” This is a key opportunity to join a supportive team and individuals will receive full training to ensure safe delivery of all sessions. The main thing that we ask for is your time! This will be a combination of attending meetings (mostly in person) and events, along with some reading of reports and documents all of which revolve around providing oversight and governance of the company and its activities. It adds up to a few days per month with most of the business conducted at our company HQ in the Bridge of Don. There are board meetings once a quarter then a variety of sub-committees that meet 3-4 times a year. The expectation is that you will be a member of at least one of the sub-committees which should align to your area of interest and/or expertise. On appointment, you will be registered as a company director at Companies House and you will meet with our Managing Director who will provide a comprehensive induction and introduction to the company. A full role profile will be provided once you apply, so for now the key things to know are: *What your duty is as a trustee: Responsible for the overall governance and strategic direction of the charitable company, developing its aims, objectives and goals in accordance with company guidelines, legal and regulatory guidelines. Protect the wealth and assets of the organisation and be legally responsible for the assets and debts of the charitable company. *Term of office: Three years(with the option of a further three years) *Remuneration: None, but out of pocket expenses are paid (excludes attending routine meetings) *Statutory responsibilities: Ensure the company complies with its constitution, articles of association and relevant legal, regulatory and governance frameworks. Provide leadership and assist with setting the overall direction and strategy of the company. Ensure that the charity’s governance is of the highest possible standard. Monitoring the financial position and ensuring that the company operates within its means and that there are clear lines of accountability for financial management. Act as guardian of the charity’s assets, both tangible and intangible, taking all due care over their security, deployment and proper application. Bring challenge and rigour to the business presented to the Board and its Committees and actively participate in the debate and discussion, offering expertise, advice and opinion as appropriate. Fully meet the requirements of the trustee code of conduct Safeguard the good name and values of the charity. *Your key attributes will be your professional experience and expertise, having worked in commerce and business at a management level.
