Could you support an older person struggling online? Aberdeen charity Silver City Surfers are looking for additional volunteers as they work to support more and more older people who are being left behind. A recent study by the charity Age UK warns "legions of older people are not able to do ordinary things like book a medical appointment, organise a blue badge for their car, or pay to park it" due to the "rush" to move services online. Silver City Surfers Coordinator Nelly Jaka comments further- “About 50% of our learners come to us for help because they are unable to access essential services such as GP appointments, paying utility bills, and getting access to benefit payments. The alarming speed of moving services online is excluding older people and leaving them in a vulnerable position”. Learner Graeme Findlay who recently attended one of the charity’s drop-in sessions says “You are very disadvantaged now if you can't use a laptop or other device”.
