Current opportunities

*Home visiting volunteers Every day Home-Start Aberdeen is providing life-changing support to families across the city. Our local community network of trained volunteers helps families with young children when they need us most. Home-Start’s Home Visiting Volunteers work alongside families, offering compassionate and confidential support, tailored to what each family wants and needs. They undergo extensive training and are supported by our expert staff team. Most of our home visiting volunteers have some parenting experience; they understand that family life can be tough sometimes, which is why their support is so valuable to another family. *Our Home Visiting Volunteers: · Visit families weekly in their own homes · Offer friendship, emotional support and practical help and be a regular, reliable presence for families · Reassure families that bringing up children can be challenging and everybody needs help sometimes · Emphasise the positive aspects of family life · Draw on their own experience to help parents develop their skills, improve their confidence and build better lives for their children · Keep children at the centre of the support focusing on their wellbeing and safety and ensuring the best possible outcomes for them *We offer our Home Visiting Volunteers: · Excellent preparation for the role through our Volunteer Preparation training course · Regular and frequent support and supervision meetings, and ongoing help and advice, from a dedicated Volunteer Coordinator · Ongoing training and personal development opportunities · The opportunity to make new friends and build social networks · Involvement in a vital local service which is part of a national and global network Home visiting requires energy, commitment, reliability, creativity and a sense of humour. Home-Start Aberdeen supports local families, who may be vulnerable or suffering from isolation, with emotional and practical support in their own homes. Our charity shop, which raises valuable funds towards our work, opened in 2012. It is located in the heart of the city at 101 George Street, (opposite the old John Lewis store). The shop is always keen to recruit volunteers who might wish to assist with a number of activities, including sorting and pricing stock, arranging window displays, liaising with customers and lending a hand at special promotional events. No prior retail experience is required; our friendly shop staff team provide all volunteers with advice and guidance. Volunteering at the Home-Start Aberdeen shop is therefore an opportunity to learn new skills, meet new people and gain confidence. It is also a meaningful way to support Home-Start Aberdeen’s work with local families. Home-Start Aberdeen supports local families, who may be vulnerable or suffering from isolation, with emotional and practical support in their own homes. Our charity shop, which raises valuable funds towards our work, opened in 2012. It is located in the heart of the city at 101 George Street, opposite John Lewis. A key component of the shop’s success is our collections/uplift service within the city. This helps to ensure that we have a steady supply of quality stock for the shop floor. The shop is therefore always keen to recruit new volunteer drivers, who could assist us by collecting donations from homes and organisations within Aberdeen (we also uplift from Westhill). This is an ideal position for someone who enjoys driving and has some spare time to become part of our pool of volunteer drivers. A full clean driving licence and access to a vehicle are essential. No fixed commitment in terms of hours is required. Becoming a volunteer driver is a rewarding way to support Home-Start Aberdeen’s work with local families. We are now one of the largest Home-Start schemes in Scotland; this volunteer position is therefore also a good opportunity to contribute to the work of a wider team. Home-Start Aberdeen supports local families, who may be vulnerable or suffering from isolation, with emotional and practical support in their own homes. Recipe for Life (practical cooking) is a project that Home-Start Aberdeen has developed in partnership with NHS Grampian in 2010. The success of the project has been such that NHS Grampian has continued to fund the project since its inception. The purpose of the project is to provide support for local families by teaching them practical cooking skills, advising on food budgeting and shopping, providing oral health information and promotion of healthy lifestyles. Our Recipe for Life volunteers receive full training and will be carefully matched to deliver Recipe for Life on the basis of family need. No formal cookery or nutritional qualifications are required – just a desire to help local families improve their overall wellbeing. By volunteering with Home-Start Aberdeen, you will be contributing to the work of one of the largest Home-Start schemes in Scotland. There is therefore an opportunity to develop new friendships, learn new skills and really make a contribution to the lives of local families.
