The Braveheart Association - Falkirk

Braveheart is a small charity, operating in the Forth Valley area of Scotland, which provides self management support groups and a led walking programme to adults with or at risk of developing long term health problems, particularly coronary heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Braveheart's model is unique to the UK. It is entirely volunteer led, and it takes a community development approach. Brave heart trains lay volunteers, many of whom have long term health conditions themselves and it involves them as leaders. Our approach is to engage with " high risk" individuals in non clinical settings such as community centres and church halls to support and encourage them to take responsibility for improving their health.

Current opportunities

Forth Valley Top Toes provides a personal foot care service for clients who are unable to provide their own personal foot care. This project supports the work of NHS podiatry services, allowing them to focus on quality care for those who really need it. Good foot care can reduce the risk of falls among vulnerable older people. Clients will be given their own set of clippers at first appointment and will bring with them to each subsequent appointment. Footcare Volunteer tasks include: - set up of the footcare room/setting - liasing with clients using the service when they attend for appointments - cutting client's toenails following the training and guidance provided - updating client's personal record booklet Whilst this project is currently unable to run footcare clinics due to current COVID restrictions, the Top Toes team are keen to hear from interested volunteers now so they can be prepared to begin this much valued service again as soon as it is possible to do so.

Braveheart are currently recruiting volunteer walk leaders in the Falkirk area. They are looking for people over the age of 18 who are reasonably fit, like walking and enjoy meeting people. If you have a few spare hours per week and would like to encourage and support other people in walking their way to good health on our Braveheart walks, please get in touch.
