Scotland’s leading community eating disorder charity, holding support group meetings for people over 18 with eating disorders and for parents, carers and families in Fife, Forth Valley, Glasgow and Perth. In the future our strategy is to expand into Edinburgh and other areas in Scotland so that we can ensure that everyone in Scotland affected by an eating disorder gets support and respect in the heart of their community.


Current opportunities

Volunteers need to be good listeners and able of offer support and encouragement in a non-judgemental manner. A good knowledge and understanding of the needs of people with mental health issues, particularly eating disorders would be advantageous. Volunteers who have previously had an eating disorder, must have been fully recovered for at least two years before taking on this role. We are specifically looking for the ability to: • Prepare for the session and be comfortable with technology for online meetings • Clear communication skills • Active listening • The ability to challenge constructively or sensitively when needed • Ability to give everyone the opportunity to have a voice • Good timekeeping

Befriender (to people experiencing an eating disorder, their friends, families and carers), by telephone - supporting people across Scotland. Volunteers need to be good listeners and able of offer support and encouragement in a non-judgemental manner. A good knowledge and understanding of the needs of people with mental health issues, particularly eating disorders would be advantageous. Volunteers who have previously had an eating disorder, must have been fully recovered for at least two years before taking on this role. We are specifically looking for your ability to be: • Open and honest – people others can relate to • Articulate, with a good telephone manner and able to communicate in a warm and welcoming way • Able to show evidence of genuine trust and hope for the future • Good listeners and encourage people to share; it is more important to hear their story than to share your own • Patience – don’t hurry people onto the next stage of their journey • Committed to attending regular training when required

Coordinate content for both the Facebook Instagram and Twitter social media channels. Volunteers need to be able to effectively manage and create the content for the active social medial channels. Ensuring content is consistent and kept up to date with events for group sessions, announcements and any other relevant promotions or posts. A good knowledge and understanding of the needs of people with mental health issues, particularly eating disorders would be advantageous. Volunteers who have previously had an eating disorder, must have been fully recovered for at least two years before taking on this role. We are specifically looking for those who have: • Knowledge about using social media channels • The ability to ensure social media channels are up to date and informative • Clear communication skills • The ability to apply elements of creative thinking • Good timekeeping and organisational skills

We are Scotland’s leading community eating disorder charity, providing peer support through Support Groups and one-to-one Befriending for those with eating disorders and for parents, carers and families. Our services are volunteer-led, most of whom have lived experience of recovering from eating disorders. Growing and developing our services is now a key focus so that we can support more people across Scotland in their recovery journey. Our plan to expand our services is led by our Development Manager with the support of our major funders, The Robertson Trust, National Lottery and Comic Relief and many other generous charitable trusts. To help us deliver our vision and meet the needs of our communities in Scotland we are looking to bring new trustees onto the Board with specific skills sets in income generation and digital. As a Board we work together as a close team, so we’re looking for trustees who enjoy working collaboratively towards a common goal and are happy to roll their sleeves up to get things done, alongside making a strategic contribution. We’re also planning to recruit some skills-based volunteers to help us deliver on key projects, and so having an interest in supporting their contribution to the Charity, and co-creating together, is important too. We currently meet as a Board once a month, typically on a Wednesday between 3-5pm. Given the stage we’re at with our growth plans, you’ll likely need to commit around 2-3 additional hours during the working week. As part of your overall trustee duties of leading and governing the charity’s activities you will bring experience of income generation, ideally in the 3rd sector, with a focus on either Strategic Funding Relationships or Community Fundraising. As a Board we have a collective responsibility for income generation and given the breadth of opportunity in this space, it’s not essential to have experience in both of these areas. We may recruit a couple of trustees with complementary skill sets to work together on this. You will also work closely with our Development Manager and partner together to align our income generation activity with our plans to deliver and expand our services. We’re looking for people who can think strategically and creatively to help us develop a sustainable funding plan with a differentiated proposition that’s clear on who we are trying to reach and the best way to do so. At the same time, you’ll also have the know-how to put this into practice and get things off the ground, and also measure our success. You’ll be confident in leading the way in one of the following areas: Strategic Funding Relationships • Building strategic relationships with key funders to secure income that provides a level of sustainable funding over multiple years e.g., charitable trusts and large-scale funders such as Comic Relief and Children in Need. • A key part of this will be working together with the Development Manager and our external funding partner to create compelling funding applications. Experience of Section 10 applications would be of help down the line. Community Fundraising • Raising funds within our local communities, tapping into the desire to give something back, through events and sponsorship and leveraging our relationships with Universities and Colleges. • Investigating digital channels and how we can use social media to raise funds. • Exploring opportunities to partner with Corporates and with businesses in our communities.
