Action on Elder Abuse Scotland (Fife)

Charity registered in Scotland SC046278

Action on Elder Abuse is a UK-wide Charity which works to protect and prevent the abuse of vulnerable older people. We provide direct information and advice to victims of abuse and others who are concerned about abuse. We also provide information materials for public and practitioners, deliver training, seminars and conferences, actively work to raise awareness of elder abuse and influence and inform policy in this area.

Current opportunities

The aim of the project is for volunteers to support people to regain self-esteem and independence, and empower them to take back control. Unlike general befriending services, we're working to help people recover from their experience and regain the skill and confidence to eventually move on from the project. A 'peer' volunteer could be someone who has experienced abuse themselves, someone of a similar age or background, or with similar interests. The key is that the person feels comfortable with their volunteer, and they can build a relationship with them in an informal and non-threatening environment. Volunteers will meet with the older person either on a one-to-one or group basis (or both), which might include: Befriending and/or emotional support. Group-based peer support with other people and volunteers. Activity-based support e.g. taking the older person to clubs, groups or taking part in hobbies or therapeutic activities together.

Community Champions support Action on Elder Abuse by raising awareness about safer ageing and how to keep older people safe in Fife. This may include organising coffee mornings, events and other sessions at church halls, your own home, care homes, schools, community halls, places of worship and other places in the local community i.e. garden centres and shops. Volunteers will meet other people including older people wishing to become volunteers or even reporting forms of abuse; they will also provide information about the aims of the charity, safer ageing and how to keep safe as an older person. Volunteers will, at times, be requested to participate in fundraising activities.
