Equal Futures

Charity registered in Scotland SC033799

Equal Futures has been supporting people with an additional support need to make connections since its foundation by family carers in 2002. We work with adults (18 years plus) with an additional support need, this could be a learning disability or another significant lifelong condition, such as Down’s syndrome or autism.
We believe that people with Additional Support Needs are among some of the most isolated, our vision is a society without loneliness with your help we can try to achieve this for everyone.
Befriending and Circle support can help someone with an additional support need make valuable connections: building their confidence, resilience and independence.
Our services also provide reassurance and respite for their family members who have often undertaken a significant caring role.
We offer a flexible approach with services that are delivered at a time and pace to suit the individual and family at the centre of the support. The services we offer are entirely free of charge.

Current opportunities

Community event volunteers attend and support our regular social events for focus people and their families in Edinburgh and Lothian’s. Social events have a theme or activity (such as arts & crafts, coding, Zumba, martial arts, etc.) and volunteers join in with the focus people. This helps to build the focus people’s confidence and skills in social situations. Events are scheduled, but volunteers can attend a selection of the dates if their schedule doesn’t allow for full commitment to the social events. Volunteers will be registered with Disclosure Scotland PVG scheme

Befrienders, as part of the circle of support, help the focus person to build their confidence and participate in social activities within their community. As a Volunteer Befriender, you will be a part of a person’s circle of support and help the focus person to build their confidence through participating in social activities within their community. This may include going for walks, participating in clubs or classes together, or attending Equal Futures’ monthly social events. Befrienders attend the circle meetings (approx. bimonthly) and meet 1:1 with their focus person weekly or fortnightly. Equal Futures supports you throughout your volunteering. Volunteers will be registered with Disclosure Scotland PVG Scheme
