The organisation’s purposes are:
4.1 The provision of a Youth & Community Centre for the use of the inhabitants of the district of Scalloway and environs, irrespective of age without distinction of any specific group, which will provide space for meetings, lectures, classes and other forms of recreation and leisure time occupation with the object of improving the conditions of life for the said inhabitants.

We run direct services for children, young people and the elderly and also do a number of community events including the Christmas Lights and flags that decorate the village.

Current opportunities

The 60 Plus Drop In has been operating since 2016 and meets weekly from 2pm – 4pm on a Wednesday. The last Wednesday of the month is the lunch club which meets at 1pm until 2.30/3pm. We are looking for volunteers to help run the clubs, this would involve setting up, planning activities and helping with these, making tea/coffee etc half way through. The members clear this up and wash the dishes etc. We often have guest speakers or agencies in as well as running activities ourselves. Most of the members are in their late 70’s and 80’s hence the need to look for more volunteers to help with the club and keep it running. The volunteers would need to start at 1.30pm but should be finished around 4pm as everyone helps clear up. Volunteers for the lunch club would start earlier in the morning as we cook the lunch at the Centre and help prepare and dish this up as well as clearing up. We also will be look for volunteer drivers to pick up people around the Scalloway area and mileage would be paid.

The Board of Trustees are urgently looking for more volunteers to join them. If you are 18 or over and this is something you would like to be involved with, but not sure what is expected of you, then please come along to one of the open days to see what happens in the Centre and learn more about the Board of Trustees. Scalloway Youth & Community Centre is a charity (SCO47950) and was built in 1996. Last year the Centre had triple glazed windows installed and insulation this year and plan to look at alternate heating systems to help become more energy efficient in the future. There is a main hall and sports cupboard. There are three table tennis tables, boccia, exercise mats and equipment as well as a variety of sports equipment. Though not quite a full sized badminton court, the hall has been lined to play a variety of sports. The kitchen is fully equipped for cooking and serving hot food as well as having a good stock of crockery and cutlery. The café area has a servery, TV and games console and a well stocked arts and crafts cupboard. Upstairs has a games room with pool table, full sized snooker table and dart board as well as a TV and games console. The Music room has a drum kit and guitars, amps and keyboard for jamming sessions as well as a large TV suitable for a variety of purposes and a computer with recording software. It is a great space for bands to practice and also used as a meeting room. We are accessible to all and have a chair lift up to the second floor.
