Ayr Film Society

Charity registered in Scotland SC006980

Ayr Film Society is an award-winning community-led cinema which has been in existence since 1973. We are based in the heart of the community, at the Town Hall in the seaside town of Ayr. Ayr Film Society is a registered charity in Scotland. We are affiliated with Ayr Arts Guild, Cinema for All and Film Hub Scotland. AFS runs a main programme of screenings from Sept through to March/April, screening every Thursday evening at the Town Hall, Ayr.

The Society is entirely volunteer run with a small management Committee. We wish to extend our use of volunteers to ensure a sustainable future for the Film Society, specifically to enhance our digital marketing, help run our screenings, grow our audience and extend our capacity to support local community groups and other community cinemas in South Ayrshire.

Current opportunities

AFS are looking for volunteers to help us develop a vibrant and engaging presence across our social media channels, to grow our audience and engage with new audiences and build stronger relationships online. We would welcome your help in creating amazing online content. This could be for someone who just loves film and loves social media and wants to give a few hours to do some posting, or perhaps you want to get into digital marketing, in which case this role could you a valuable opportunity to develop and implement a digital marketing strategy to showcase your talent. This requires proactive monitoring of our social media and the creation of compelling and timely posts, together with encouraging interaction with followers and/groups on these channels developing interaction with other film related feeds. You may be working with other volunteers to co-ordinate/contribute to campaigns across our website and direct email channels.

AFS would like to broaden its Committee membership to enhance our skillset and capacity to develop as a community organisation. We are interested in people who have a keen interest in a broad range of film and who will bring professional and life skills which would assist the Society to develop. There is an immediate need for a Committee Minutes Secretary and other roles might include: taking a lead in communications and marketing; fundraising or sponsorship and grant applications; developing links with other community organisations and in growing our audience numbers and diversity.

Do you love film? Fancy yourself a film critic? We are looking for someone to help develop a film oriented “Zine” and to build our subscriber base. AFS already produces an occasional eMagazine using Mailchimp – we are looking for a creative film lover to develop this format with new and engaging features with information about streaming films, online festivals, and links to film related content such as online interviews/Q&As, Film School conent, or comment pieces and reviews of interest to our audience and relevant to our forthcoming screenings at to help build our subscriber base. We know from audience surveys that email is a primary channel that our audience uses and we would like to grow the numbers of subscribers.

AFS depends on volunteers to run screenings each Thursday evening through our September to March season. These roles include: setting up reception desks and displays; ticketing and membership sales admin; ushering [this will be especially important on re-opening to ensure COVID restrictions are maintained and to assist people with where to sit and with the mandatory one-way flow system in place at the Town Hall]; and mandatory Fire Wardens.
