Our befrienders come from all walks of life. They range from 18 to 80+ and include students, parents of young children, part time and full time workers while some are retired.
Whatever your background or circumstances you can befriend if:
You like talking to others
You are able to listen
You have a couple of hours each week/fortnight that you would enjoy spending with an older person
We have befriendees waiting across Kincardine & Deeside, so if you live in or near Portlethen, Newtonhill, Stonehaven, Inverbervie, Gourdon, St Cyrus, Laurencekirk, Fordoun, Fettercairn, Drumoak, Banchory, Aboyne, Ballater, Torphins, Lumphanan, Tarland & Braemar areas (or anywhere in between!), please reach out.

Organisation aims and objectives

K & D Befriending is a local registered charity which aims to reduce social isolation and loneliness in older people throughout Kincardine and Deeside area by matching them on a one-to-one basis with a volunteer befriender. A regular visit from a befriender can provide companionship, practical and emotional support, and generally improve physical and mental wellbeing; in many cases, a carer also benefits from the welcome respite provided.

The Volunteer Befriender helps residents who feel isolated or unable to get out very easily on their own by giving time on a one to one basis to help a person maintain social contact, provide companionship and reduce loneliness and social isolation. Volunteer befrienders build a positive relationship with an individual and visit them on a regular basis in their own flat. This could mean spending some time with a person for an hour or two every week/fortnight, we also encourage getting out and about for a coffee or short walk. Generally, befrienders are there to chat and get to know someone, have fun. Support the person to continue with existing interests, whilst encouraging them to embark on new activities.

Food Train is an award-winning charity providing services to older people who are no longer able to manage independently, through age, ill health, frailty or disability. The aim of Food Train Friends is to improve quality of life for our members, by providing them with a befriending service on a regular basis. Volunteers provide a consistent and reliable support to help customers experience social interaction on a regular basis. Be able to attend at flexible hours and various locations as the service requires . Provide an effective befriending service for your befriendee (either on the telephone, in their homes or on group outings/activities) • Spend time with your befriendee and simply chat, listen and discuss various topics • Make the service, events attended and conversations interesting and fun • Be reliable and presentable • Provide monitoring and reporting information as required on time spent and activities with the befriendee to the project staff • Attend volunteer meetings, training events and 1-2-1 updates with service staff.

We are looking for Volunteer Befrienders to help support Older People throughout North Ayrshire who are living in their own home. This role requires the following: • Someone to provide companionship and support by visiting the individual in their own home • Where possible, accompany older people to lunch clubs, social activities etc. to increase social interaction and encourage the older person to develop new friendships If you like the idea of working alongside older individuals to prevent isolation then this is the right opportunity for you.

Befriender

They are looking for volunteer befrienders to help them expand their growing service. Volunteer befrienders provide one to one befriending to a socially isolated older person, visiting them in their home and/or taking them out to take part in activities in their local community. This could be popping in once a week for a cup of tea or supporting the befriendee to become more confident or join in community activities. This role is to: - meet with an older person once per week for a mutually agreed length of time - encourage involvement in activities, being mindful of the befriendee's abilities and limitations - maintain confidentiality regarding befriendee information - take part in mandatory induction training and any other relevant training - take part in planned regular reviews with LinkLiving staff - ensure relevant expenses are claimed and receipts are kept on a monthly basis - attend induction training and any other training relevant to the post - operate within LinkLiving policies and procedures and any other relevant guidelines and Legislation. - raise any concerns regarding members’ wellbeing with LinkLiving staff Please note, volunteer befrienders will not be asked to meet any personal care needs
