Volunteer Mentor (MSV Dundee)

Are you looking for a rewarding way of sharing your experiences and life skills in order to make a positive impact in your community and help tackle poverty? This is the opportunity for you!

Volunteering Matters are now recruiting volunteer mentors for the MSV (Mentoring & Supported Volunteering) project in Dundee. Mentors will provide 1:1 support to an individual in their community to overcome barriers they face in reaching positive destinations e.g. employment, further education, volunteering etc.

MSV is a person-centred project, putting mentees at the heart of the match making process. The volunteer mentor role is fully supported by the MSV team, and the time commitment is very flexible, we ask for a minimum of 4 months commitment, but many mentoring relationships have gone on longer than this. This role will involve getting to know your mentee and the challenges they may face, discussing their future goals, building their confidence, sharing your own experiences or skills, and ultimately championing them to progress in life and work.

MSV mentoring can take place face to face in/around the Dundee area, or remotely/online where necessary.

Our volunteers do not need to have any specific career experience or qualification – just a positive and empathetic mindset and a passion for helping others to succeed. Some mentees are looking for a career-based match (working with someone who has experience of the area they want to pursue), whilst others are looking for more general support in identifying their goals, building their self-confidence or working through challenges they face with a new, objective perspective. Your personal outlook, life experiences or professional expertise could be exactly what a mentee is looking for in mentoring support – so please get in touch!

Frequency and commitment details

Flexible. This really depends on what works best for both you and your mentee to work around your life/work schedules. We typically suggest trying to meet regularly for 1 hour every 1-2 weeks, but this is not fixed.

Restrictions

Experience required: Enough personal and professional experience that you would feel confident in being able to competently support somebody in their own employability journey or in overcoming barriers to positive destinations. Empathetic, positive, non judgemental. Interested in improving your own leadership/coaching skills. Willing to comply with required application/ PVG check, training/ monitoring processes of the volunteer role.

Denny and Dunipace CAB run a comprehensive training programme for Trainee Advisers which provides support and mentoring with an experienced Adviser. In return, your travel expenses will be reimbursed by the Bureau and there is access to external training once all initial training is completed. Many Advisers have gained useful experience and qualifications whilst volunteering for Denny and Dunipace CAB which have helped them gain employment.

Home visiting volunteer

Home-Start Glasgow South is a family support charity based in Glasgow South. We work with families, with at least one child up to the age of 8, who are struggling to cope with the challenges of parenting along with sometimes difficult personal circumstances. Our volunteers visit families for 2-3 hours each week in their own home to provide practical and emotional support. If a family is isolated, they may need support to go to a local group. An overwhelmed parent may need help to organise the household or it could be that a mum or dad just need someone to talk to. A volunteer can make a big difference in a couple of hours a week. Volunteering in the family home can also include Perinatal Support (pregnancy -2 years) and English Tutoring. The support and friendship you can provide is invaluable and can help take away some of the stresses of day to day life, enabling parents to cope better with daily tasks and improve their confidence, giving their children the best possible start in life.

Volunteers are involved in a wide range of roles and day-to-day activities that support the running of each store for two hours or more a week. Behind the scenes, volunteers get involved with store housekeeping and administration, sorting through donations to find those hidden gems and preparing goods for sale by sorting, steaming and pricing items. Do you have specific retail skills to donate? We're also looking for volunteers with skills and ideas around visual merchandising, identifying stock generation channels and raising awareness of our charity shops. Using your local knowledge, you could help to maximise the shop’s potential. Your role will include some of, but is not restricted to, the following tasks: • Sort through donations, find hidden gems • Prepare items for sale • Maintain the shop floor and provide excellent customer service to our shoppers • Operate the till • Help out with basic housekeeping Young Volunteers Please note: A signed Parent/Guardian Consent Form is required for all volunteers aged 14-17 years.

General Advisor

The role The role of a CAB general adviser is very varied. Some of the thing’s advisers do in Nairn CAB: •Interview clients at the bureau, by phone or in person: listen to the client and let them explain the problem, help them to clarify the issues by exploring the problem and asking questions. •Provide information from our AdviserNet information system and other sources. •Explain the choices the client faces, and what these choices mean. •Offer practical help to clients by writing letters, making phone calls and helping fill in forms. •Perform calculations (for example, to assess entitlement to certain kinds of benefits). •Refer clients to other agencies if they are better placed to help. •Record cases: make a record of the client’s details so that further help can be given if a client returns to the bureau. •Prevent future problems by identifying issues that affect a lot of clients – this is called social policy work.
