Volunteer at Penicuik Open House

There is an opportunity to volunteer at the OPEN HOUSE in Penicuik Town Hall on Saturday mornings. Open House is a friendly place which serves coffees, teas, homemade cakes and scones at modest prices and later in the morning, soup and bread. There is also a popular fortnightly exhibition on topics relating to Penicuik’s fascinating life and history. As a volunteer you would join an enthusiastic team which works in groups of two or three according to a rota. There are two shifts: the first from 9:30am- 11:45am and the second from 11:45am-2:00pm. You would help to lay out crockery, food and drinks as guided; serve the customers and wash up and clear away at the end. You would offer a friendly welcome to all customers, many of whom are regulars, and you would help to create a sociable and relaxed atmosphere where people can meet their friends and make new ones.

Organisation aims and objectives

Penicuik Community Development Trust brings together local people to invest their time, talents and energy to make Penicuik a better place for families to grow up in, community activities to flourish, businesses to thrive, and others to find Penicuik an attractive place to visit. The aims are to promote the benefit of the people of Penicuik and its environs (being defined as all those who live within the town and its environs as well as any others who participate as active members of organisations based in Penicuik), without distinction of sex, sexuality, political, religious or other opinions, by actions: to advance community development; to advance education; to advance the arts, heritage, culture and science; to provide facilities, or assist in the provision of facilities, for recreation and other leisure time activities in the interests of social welfare so that the conditions of life may be improved

Experience required: A person will need basic domestic skills but no previous experience is required. The opportunity would suit you if you enjoy meeting people and value community life
Travel details: Buses 37/47 and 62 all stop just beyond the Town Hall

Expenses paid: Yes
Expenses details: Bus fares can be paid on the day providing appropriate evidence of the fare is available.
Training details: You would shadow an experienced volunteer for the morning (shifts are 2:15 minutes long). They would guide you in setting out the serving table and in all other procedures.

Cafe Assistant

On the 20th March 2011 the people of Girvan celebrated the official opening of their community garden. People couldn't believe the transformation of what was once a neglected and overgrown tree nursery. Before we took over the area in 2006/07 it had lain derelict for over 30 years. We knew it had lots of potential and so we decided to ask the community what they thought of turning it into a community garden. The support was overwhelming. As you can imagine there was lots to do to get the area into a state where we could start to design and plant. We relied heavily on volunteers who are the backbone of our community garden. In July 2010 we became part of the Beechgrove Garden Community Garden’s project. They came and filmed us and helped with our design ideas. It finally felt like we were really getting somewhere. After all of the hard work it's wonderful to be able to open the garden up to so many different people. We relish the opportunity to promote gardening and other related activities particularly to those who are new gardeners and young children. We support community well-being and better health through gardening. Events held in the community garden are well attended and supported. We are currently looking for volunteer Cafe Assistants to help us on Saturdays in our Community Garden Cafe. Do you have a few free hours on Saturdays? Kids Activities Volunteer

Volunteer Cook - Meal Makers

Food Train is an award winning charity providing services to older people who are no longer able to manage independently, through age, ill health, frailty or disability. The Connects service offers a volunteer matching service for grocery shopping, telephone befriending and meal delivery. Help to combat feelings of loneliness, isolation and malnutrition amongst older people (55+) by becoming a Volunteer Cook. You do not need to be a Jamie or Nigella to get involved – just the ability to prepare an extra portion of your meal once a week, to drop off with an older neighbour and have a light hearted blether with them. The role is fun, flexible and can be done at a time that suits you and your matched member! *The Role: · Paired with an older person to prepare an extra portion of your home cooked meal and deliver it to them at their home. · Have a wee chat, agree times and dates for the next meal and serve up/help put the meal away as required. · To report back to Food Train Connects team and complete all required documentation after each visit. · To report any matters of concern to Food Train staff · To inform Food Train Staff of any accidents, incidents or complaints · To maintain confidentiality · To represent Food Train in a professional manner to customers and the wider community A fantastic opportunity to help make a real difference. Cafe and Shop Volunteer

Volunteering as a member of the Café team you will play an integral part of Kirkmichael's community shop and cafe, by helping to deliver a café experience for our visitors and guests whether in the Café or at events. Your role as a Community Cafe volunteer will be: Assisting the Café team in the day to day running of the Café, such as the preparation and delivery of various hot and cold food and drinks and assisting with the day to day running of the Café. - Dealing with the visitors and customers in a friendly and polite manner. - Handling cash. - Delivering food and drink to our guests and clearing tables. - Emptying waste bins. We support all volunteers and offer to pay for training such as the online food handling course. Volunteers are always supported by trustee members and/or staff at the shop and cafe.
