We believe that mental distress is not just a problem to be addressed by professional experts but is a human problem that can be alleviated with a human response. Co-workers play a key role at Lothlorien in working towards creating a home-like, conflict-free and non-authoritarian environment. The notion of community is reinforced because co-workers are choosing to make Lothlorien their home, rather than being paid to ‘look after’ residents. As community members, co-workers have an acknowledged right to have their individual needs and limitations taken into account rather than being continuously expected to be in the caring role. Although distinctions between co-workers and residents are minimised, the co-workers have a key role to play by helping to provide support and encouragement to sustain the daily routines. They aim to take an approach of ‘doing with’ rather than ‘doing for’ so that everyone is encouraged to participate to the best of their ability. In this way, unnecessary dependency is avoided, and residents can develop their sense of autonomy and independence. Forming and sustaining meaningful social and personal relationships is a major part of recovery. The co-worker's role is, as much as anything else, a befriending one, which eases the residents' transition into the social world from which many people with mental health problems are excluded. Therefore, co-workers are encouraged to relate to residents in a open, tolerant and non-judgemental manner, based on informality and mutual respect. Activities include cooking, gardening, games, arts and crafts, driving in local area and to various events.

Organisation aims and objectives

The centre is founded on 3 main areas of activity namely spiritual development, charitable aid, and health and therapy. The centre is open to people of all faiths and religions and offers a wide variety of courses ranging from weekend workshops of relaxation, drawing and tai-chi, to intensive meditation retreats.

National Helpline Volunteers

Cruse Scotland Bereavement Support is seeking enthusiastic and compassionate volunteers to answer telephone calls to their National Helpline. Applicants should have excellent listening skills and the ability to put people at ease on the telephone. You should be able to keep a level head when dealing with distressing, angry or difficult calls. Full training will be given - volunteers will be expected to take part in ALL of the training dates before undertaking this role. We ask that all helpline volunteers commit to at least one 3-hour shift per week. This can be daytime, evenings or weekends. This role will be home based.

Volunteer Helpers

Do you love meeting people? Do you want to help older people in the local community? YES! Then this is a great volunteering opportunity for you. Our trusted, reliable and friendly volunteers provide a vital weekly food shopping service which helps older people stay healthy and independent at home. Volunteer Helpers normally dedicate one day a week to Food Train with a minimum time commitment of between four and five hours starting around 9.30am and finishing around 14:30pm. On Mondays our Helpers collect shopping lists from our customers. This involves going to customers’ homes around the Galashiels, Hawick and Selkirk areas accompanied by a Volunteer Driver, checking shopping lists are correct and clearly written and in some cases writing lists for customers. On Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays Volunteer Helpers deliver shopping around the Galashiels, Hawick and Selkirk areas accompanied by a Volunteer Driver. Shopping is collected from Tesco or Asda in Galashiels already boxed and is delivered in a dedicated Food Train van to each customers’ home where it is unpacked, checked and put away if required. Customers pay for their shopping at this point, so Volunteer Helpers carry a small money float and some cash handling will be required. This social and active post will help keep you fit and active whilst providing an invaluable service to the local community.
