Join us and be part of a team that is renowned for delivering high quality, free and independent advice across Shetland. Board members have a key role by supporting those on the front line.

Volunteers like you are central to what our service is all about - ensuring our Bureau is rooted within Shetland community and bringing your own gifts and experience to help ensure that people in the Shetland Community have access to the advice they need.

Our burau is a charity, set up for public benefit, and one of the main duties of a trustee is to be responsible for the strategic management of the bureau and set a vision for the organisation. The Board must ensure that it adheres to all legal requirements (e.g. company, charity and employment). Good governance and setting standards as an exemplary employer are key.

Organisation aims and objectives

To ensure that individuals do not suffer through ignorance of their rights and responsibilities, or of the services available to them, or through an inability to express their needs. To exercise a responsible influence on the development of social policies and services, both locally and nationally.

Frequency and commitment details

Board Meeting every 2 months at 5.30pm

Restrictions

Experience required: No qualifiactions required. Good communication skills, and experience in Finance/strategic planning welcome, but not essential.
Travel details: Market House, Lerwick
Minimum age: 18

Following a very successful International Street Food festival last year we are launching a new Community Interest Company to make this an annual event. We want to demonstrate how much our area benefits from having people of different backgrounds and cultures enrich our society. The festival is a mix of community groups whom we help to take part and commercial enterprises who pay for their stalls. Orkney ZeroWaste are currently seeking to recruit Trustees (Directors) and would welcome expressions of interest from people of all backgrounds who have a passion for reducing, reusing and recycling waste in order to help protect Orkney’s rich natural environment. Trustees share the collective responsibility for the effective governance and development of Orkney ZeroWaste, setting the charity’s strategy and major policies in accordance with the Charity's, vision, mission, and values. They are responsible for monitoring performance against the charity’s strategic aims and objectives, scrutinising the management of risk, and fulfilling the statutory governance obligations. They are also ambassadors for the charity and are expected to fully embody our values. Roles are unremunerated, but reasonable expenses (e.g., travel) will be reimbursed. Key activities Orkney ZeroWaste’s Board meets monthly. These meetings take place either virtually or in Orkney. Trustees are expected to commit to attending meetings, where possible, as well as to join suitable Sub-Committees/ groups, based on their skills and expertise. We also encourage Trustees to engage in other activities where possible to support the work of the charity.

Dunfermline Greenspace is a local organisation set up to benefit the community of Dunfermline and to preserve, restore and improve the environment. They aim to use public greenspace to benefit and protect the wellbeing, health, recreation and leisure of the community, while also providing education, training and volunteering opportunities. They are currently looking for new trustees to join their board. As a board member, you will attend monthly meetings and make decisions on behalf of the charity.
