Description

As part of Greener Kirkcaldy’s Communities Connected Project, they are looking for volunteer walk leaders. Their walks inspire people to reduce their carbon emissions by driving less and walking more, and are easy and sociable. Walk leaders lead and support short walks in the Kirkcaldy area to encourage people to come together and keep active. A small amount of preparation is sometimes required for the walk, alongside the Sessional Walk Leader.

If you can give around two hours per month, enjoy walking, and would like to help people to explore the Kirkcaldy area, this could be the role for you.

Organisation aims and objectives

Greener Kirkcaldy is a community-led charity working locally to bring people together, take positive action on the climate emergency and support people through fuel poverty and food insecurity. We deliver a range of projects, events and skills training to achieve the needs and goals of local people – building resilience as a community and working towards a future where everyone can live better and tread more lightly on our planet. Based in the heart of Kirkcaldy – with a community building, training kitchen, bike shop and garden – we carry out activities across Kirkcaldy and work with partners to deliver projects across Fife

Experience required: Greener Kirkcaldy are looking for volunteers with good people skills, communication skills and organisational skills who can adhere to Health & Safety procedures.
Travel details: Once a month in and around Kirkcaldy.
Minimum age: 16

Expenses paid: Yes
Expenses details: Expenses are available for volunteers. They will fill in a form and claim the most environmentally friendly form of transport.
Training details: The volunteer will be offered a Greener Kirkcaldy Induction and climate action induction. Greener Kirkcaldy encourage volunteers to join a walk and chat to a walk leader first, to see how it works. The volunteer will also be invited to any relevant training and will complete the walk leader training with Paths for All.

ROLE DESCRIPTION: Job title: Volunteer Walk Leader Reporting to: Walking Development Officer Overall purpose: To research and lead suitable free short health walks (1/2 mile to 3 miles) MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: - To undertake initial and ongoing training (Braveheart induction, walk leader training course, first aid course and cardiopulmonary resuscitation training course – CPR) - To provide a safe and welcoming environment to all walkers - To lead safe and enjoyable local walks for people of all ages and abilities, bearing in mind the information provided at the training course ie use of the cue card messages - To encourage walkers to aim to walk independently as well as taking part in the Walk with Braveheart programme - To promote the health benefits of walking and motivate people to take up walking as a form of physical recreation - To help walkers tailor health walking to meet their individual needs - To carry out appropriate administration procedures maintaining client confidentiality ie completion of the walk register and the health questionnaire - To encourage all walkers to take part in other health related activities organised by Braveheart - From time to time, assist the Walking Development Officer when giving talks in the local community - As far as possible, to attend the six-weekly walk leader meetings - To keep up-to-date with walk leading by reading the information provided by Paths for All on a regular basis ROLE PROFILE: - Skills: Must have successfully completed the Walk Leader training course, CPR/ First Aid training courses. - Experience: No previous experience is necessary as full training will be given. ABILITIES: - Ability to mix with a cross section of the general public and vulnerable adults - Ability to research and risk assess (with support from the Walking Development Officer) walks independently and as part of a team

Walk Leader

Do you want to share your love of walking with others in your local area? Becoming a walk leader is a great way to do it. As a walk leader, you can plan and lead group walks, and you get to choose exactly where to walk and share your favourite routes with others. You’ll grow in confidence and skills with each walk you lead and may find yourself choosing to lead more challenging walks and explore new areas. It’s a great way to connect with both nature and people in your community. The Ramblers has over 24,000 walk leaders leading a variety of walks, from 10-minute urban strolls to scrambles up Scotland’s Munros, so no matter your ability, there is a walk for you. There are currently six groups looking for walk leaders - St Andrews, Glenrothes, Kirkcaldy, Dunfermline, Dalgety Bay and the Fife-wide Fife Young Walkers group. Full training will be provided.

Walk Leader (Stirling/Clackmannanshire)

The Retired and Senior Volunteer Programme (RSVP) are looking for Volunteer Walk Leaders, to take part and lead walks across the Stirlingshire and Clackmannanshire areas. Normally Walk Leaders are aged 50+ however this is not essential. Our Walking Group meets on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Those who participate are older people normally aged 50+ who benefit from the opportunity to get out of the house, meet other people, and keep active. Our walk programme is published each quarter with information on the days/dates of each walk, along with the starting location. As a Walk Leader, you will lead a walk, ensuring that all Walkers are safe during the activity. Training and support is provided.

Walk Leader

After a diagnosis of a chest or heart condition, stroke, or Long Covid, many people experience fear and isolation, and struggle with the impact on their lives. The care and support we deliver every day ensures everyone can live the life they want to. Across Scotland, we provide vital advice, information, and support through our No Life Half Lived strategy. The walking project at CHSS aims to increase access to walking as part of the prevention of chest, heart or stroke conditions. We are looking for volunteer walk leaders to enable walks in their community.
