  • VO99787

The Orkney Library and Archive in Kirkwall are looking to start a Seed Library and are looking for volunteers who know about cultivating/drying seeds and would be keen to get involved.

The main duties will be to:

Liaise with library staff to help get the seed library up and running and organised;

Helping to write instructions to guide people on what to do and when;

Keeping a check on the seed stock, seed health and the presentation of seeds;

Helping to prepare seed packets, labelling and display in the library;

Assisting with seed library events in the future.

Organisation aims and objectives

Orkney Library & Archive provides a wide range of services, many of them free of charge. We welcome everybody, whether a resident of Orkney or visitor and provide free internet access on our computers or free WiFi connection if you would rather use your own device. Orkney Archive is housed within the main building in Kirkwall and is the place to go if you want to learn about the history and culture of Orkney.

Hours to be negotiated to suit volunteers, although a minimum number of hours may need to be committed to initially.

We would welcome young people getting involved, as well as those with additional support needs, as long as there is an adult volunteer working with them who could offer any support needed.
Experience required: We are looking for people who have a knowledge and interest in gardening, and who have good communication skills. An interest in sustainability and promoting healthy living would also be useful.

Training details: All volunteers will be involved in the planning of the Seed Library from the start, as this is a new venture. Library staff will be on hand to provide support to any volunteers and will work through procedures and practices on a regular basis. Communication with volunteers will be ongoing throughout.
