Macmillan Cancer Support has funded Leisure and Culture Dundee to set up cancer information and support services in libraries across the city of Dundee. The aim of the programme is to provide individuals affected by cancer with local access to cancer information, emotional support, and signposting to a range of different partner services. Volunteers are at the heart of this project and are central to the success of the service. Main Duties and Responsibilities: Setting up, and closing down the service Meeting and greeting people, providing a warm welcome to the Macmillan service Making appointments and direct referrals to the appropriate agencies Providing a friendly, listening ear to people Explaining the resources and services available in Dundee Collecting and recording information about people who use the service Recording messages Referring complex enquiries to a supervisor Keeping the information displays stocked and up to date Attending volunteer development sessions to keep informed about developments in services Building strong community links and raising awareness of the service Benefits to you: Full support from the wider Macmillan team Full training The chance to meet and make friends with like-minded people Make a real difference to the lives of people affected by cancer in your local community Exciting range of social networking opportunities within Macmillan Excellent experience to enhance your CV References can be provided to volunteers who are involved for more than six months Be part of an innovative cancer support project

Can you spare a few hours per month? Would you like to support people in your community who have been affected by cancer? ANGUSalive are working in partnership with Macmillan to develop information and support services for anyone affected by cancer in Angus based in Arbroath, Brechin, Carnoustie, Forfar, Kirriemuir, Monifieth and/or Montrose libraries. Options for Volunteer Involvement- · Advertising and Signposting our service locally · Stock checking booklets and ordering regularly · Face-to-Face support for people in Angus, giving written information and signposting to other support services What will you get out of it? · Training in listening and supporting others (Macmillan/Queen Margaret University accredited training course) · Opportunity to support people in your community · Opportunity to attend certain training courses run by Angus Council, NHS Tayside and Macmillan Cancer Support · Other wider Macmillan volunteering roles if interested How much time should I give? Could you support unpaid carers or people with disabilities to access benefits? Could you help someone find local services? Could you help someone understand the information they have been given about their care and support? Could you support or lead a group of people on a topic of interest? You could help improve the quality of someone’s life. This role is ideal for social work students, an interest in the care sector or retired professionals. Support Session Volunteers help our clients with general advocacy, supporting people with a variety of challenges. This helps us to reduce waitlists and support more individuals by: • Helping clients understand about advocacy • Supporting clients to self-advocate with our tool kits • Signposting clients to other services where required • Supporting the service to deliver “collective” advocacy sessions • Light Touch Advocacy • Supporting advocates with casework • Promotion of services and the organisation • Logging activity onto our systems Volunteer, Ben’s priorities changed after a serious illness. “I wanted to give something back. It’s really rewarding as you get to use your knowledge and skills for a really good purpose.” You’ll develop skills in communication and confidentiality, add experience and knowledge to your CV, and know you’re making a genuine difference to people’s lives.

For those affected by a terminal illness, it can be hard to get support and they might feel lonely. By volunteering as a Check in and Chat volunteer, you'll be matched with an individual who needs emotional support and a chance to chat freely about how they're feeling.
