Description

Music at Paxton is looking to appoint a Chair of Trustees to provide strategic leadership and to support the Artistic Director and General Manager in their roles to achieve Music at Paxton’s aims and objectives.

Role Description :
The Chair of Trustees provides support, direction and overall leadership, setting the cultural tone for the
Board and ensuring that it fulfils its responsibilities for the governance of the SCIO in delivering Music at
Paxton’s charitable objectives. The Chair works in partnership with the Festival’s Artistic Director and
General Manager, supporting them in their roles to achieve the aims of the SCIO.
Key tasks:
• Planning and facilitating the annual cycle of meetings of the Board.
• Chairing meetings of the Board, ensuring that meetings are run efficiently; that discussion and
decision-making is democratic and fully participative; and that decisions are implemented.
• Overseeing workstreams of the Board and authorising action to be taken in between meetings of
the Board.
• Providing financial oversight, including driving fundraising and income generation.
• Supporting the Artistic Director and General Manager in their roles, acting as a sounding board; and
as a channel of communication between them and the Board.
• Acting as an ambassador for Music at Paxton, identifying and developing external relationships for
the benefit of the SCIO.
• Ensuring that the Board of Trustees is regularly refreshed, making sure that it includes the right
balance of skills, knowledge and experience required to govern and lead the SCIO effectively; and
which also reflects the communities that Music at Paxton serves.

Trustees serve an initial term of office of four years, which may be renewed for a further four-year term.

Skills/Experience Required :
Whilst previous leadership experience in a similar role would be of benefit, this is not obligatory.

Applications are welcomed from all parts of the UK. but we would be particularly interested to hear from those
with a connection to the Scottish Borders and/or Northumberland. Whilst prior governance experience would
be an advantage, this is not a requirement.

Music at Paxton’s music festival & series of chamber music concerts provides affordable access to world class music in the under-served area of the Scottish Borders, attracting visitors & boosting the local economy. Special emphasis is placed on community, participation & outreach, encouraging under-represented parts of the community to engage & supporting advanced students & young professionals.
