Volunteer Community Meal Cook

Description

Penicuik Storehouse is a community owned shop and cafe, run mostly by volunteers and stocking local and ethically sourced products. It is within our ethos to support the local community and provide of a weekly three course nutritious community meal every Wednesday.

We are looking for volunteer cooks to lead the community meal. The cook will be assisted by a number of volunteer kitchen hands. The menu can be decided by the volunteer cook or provided by the Storehouse. We have flexibility of ingredients but aim to always provide a vegan option. The meal caters for around 45 serves. The commitment involves roughly one Wednesday a month from 10am-3pm, plus a couple of hours on the Tuesday afternoon before to prepare ingredients in advance.

Tasks include:
Menu planning (optional)
Leading on food preparation on the day or the day before
Cooking on the day of the meal
Serving food to attendees if not enough volunteers are available to assist
Assisting cleaning up after the meal by clearing and wiping tables, washing dishes and kitchen equipment to return the kitchen to its original state

Organisation aims and objectives

As a social enterprise we have set ourselves a mission to bring people together and make our community resilient. In our shop we stock fresh produce, groceries, household products and toiletries that are local, ethical, environmentally friendly, organic, or fair trade to enable to help people live a healthier more sustainable life. In our cafe we serve healthy soups, home made quiches, sausage rolls and coffee and provide a place for people to meet. We are proud to work together with a variety of other community projects and charities.

CPR Champion - Scottish Borders

As a CPR Champion you will support St John Scotland as part of their partnership with Save a Life for Scotland. You will get the opportunity to attend various events within your local area with other St John Scotland CPR Champions and CPR Leads ensuring that participants are equipped to undertake potentially lifesaving bystander CPR according to current policies, regulations and protocol. You will also be trained on demonstrating defibrillator usage to participants. Main tasks: - Deliver Bystander CPR awareness to various people at different events within your local area - Defibrillator Demonstration (training is provided)

HALLA Board Secretary /Administrator

Volunteer Secretary/Administrator we need you, with you inspiration and motivation to serve as a board member on the Management Board of HALLA (Harlaw Area Lifelong Learning Association). We are a Board of people who run daytime and evening classes at Kaimhill Learning Centre, (Garthdee). We have a FB page ( @HALLACommunity) where you can see some of our activities and tutored classes. We meet once a month to discuss new opportunities and management issues, to find new ways of how-to bring people of all ages of the community into the centre. A volunteer should be passionate, enthusiastic and have a keen interest in community matters. A secretary / administrator volunteer requires specific skills such office procedure, basic accounting and IT skills (excel, word) but enthusiasm and interest in the community are equally important. This is an amazing opportunity to discover your “hidden talents” !!! You need to attend our monthly Board meetings for taking notes, minutes and prepare all the documentation and email the Board members. HALLA has a computer in the centre.
