Charity Trustee

Description

Founded in 2017, The Arkbound Foundation is the only independent charity in the UK that is concerned with improving accessibility and diversity within both publishing and journalism. While our headquarters are based in Bristol, we have recently launched a Glasgow office and are looking to expand our authorship to Scottish authors and audiences. With this, we are looking to secure a collection of Scottish trustees to help formalise and manage our proceedings here in Glasgow.

What will you be doing?

We are looking for trustees based in Scotland to help oversee the development of our charity. The Arkbound Foundation seeks to improve diversity and access within publishing and media – supporting people from disadvantaged backgrounds to get published, whether through literature or journalism.

You should be passionate about social and environmental impact, be able to attend meetings once a month (usually no more than 90 minutes each), and with around a total of 4 hours a month spare - though if you can provide more time, that would be beneficial. A trustee responsibility can help you grow key skills and experience of relevance to a wide range of industries, and it also gives you a unique chance to make long-lasting impact.

The Arkbound Foundation principally works with people who have experienced social exclusion, including those who have faced homelessness, imprisonment and discrimination by their background, circumstance or personal characteristics. Our ethos is about empowerment, positive transformation and accessibility.

This role provides the opportunity to make a big difference to a small organisation, where you can input into operations and help provide directions to ensure the charity meets its objectives. Ideally, you would be based within travelling distance of Glasgow, where our office is, but any person who lives or works in Scotland can be considered. You do not necessarily need knowledge or experience of publishing or journalism, just the ability to volunteer for a few hours a month. The role is flexible so you can fit it around your other commitments.

You can take part in this opportunity from anywhere
Make a big impact in a small organisation and gain valuable experience and skills.
Ideally, you will have some experience with diversity and inclusion and an interest in literature or journalism. We are interested in meeting people with various skills and ideas so please just get in touch and we can discuss.

What are we looking for?

We are looking for someone with some knowledge or experience in publishing or journalism (though not essential), with the ability to volunteer for a few hours a month. While most of your work could be done from home, we would occasionally ask our trustees to attend meetings.

You may also be interested in British social issues, and help make a difference in the lives of people and communities from disadvantaged backgrounds. We would be interested in candidates with comprehensive experience of working within charity organisations, or for organisations with a keen social focus. While not essential, the ideal candidate would couple their experience within charity / socially-focused work with some experience with financial management. We would also be interested in someone with experience in administration.

What's in it for the volunteer?

We play a vital role in expanding publishing to a more diverse range of voices and have made a unique difference in British publishing by providing access to less orthodox opinions and views on British social and political issues. By taking on the role of trustee, you would be helping manage an organisation that is making a significant difference in this field of work.

If you are interested please click the ‘apply’ button below (available when logged in and registered). You will then be contacted by the coordinator by email or phone call. If you have not heard back after 5 working days, the first step is to contact the organisation with the contact details provided. You could also check your junk/spam folder on your emails just in case the response is there. If that doesn’t work out then please feel free to contact Volunteer Glasgow on 0141 226 3431.
