Description

The Playpen is a community café for parents and carers and their children aged 0-5. We offer a secure and gated playroom with imagination and role-playing toys with a café area for parents/carers. While parents maintain responsibility for supervision of their children, playroom assistants are on-hand to play with the children, encourage their interaction with each other and offer an additional helping hand. The café facility provides breakfast, lunch, snacks, home-baking and a range of hot and cold beverages. We are based in Muckhart Coronation Hall every Friday and Crook of Devon village hall on Tuesdays. Operating as a not-for-profit social enterprise, volunteers are key to the running of the project.

The commis chef/kitchen assistant will assist the executive chef in the kitchen, preparing a variety of hot and cold food, including hot and cold sandwiches, soup, cakes and bakes. A vast amount of food will be prepared off-site, so the focus will be on plating and serving rather than prep-from-scratch, although there may be opportunity to prepare certain menu items from scratch depending on produce donated to the café on any given day.

Broadly, your role will involve the following key tasks:

• Organising and storing of food and equipment
• Prepping food for service, including chopping and cooking of raw food in advance of opening hours
• Preparing and plating a variety of hot and cold food dishes
• Keeping kitchen clean and tidy in line with health and safety procedures
• Maintaining an awareness and taking responsibility for good hygiene practices in the kitchen
• Maintaining safety and hygiene records in-line with Cooksafe recommendations and guidelines

It is desirable that volunteers already have the REHIS Elementary Food Hygiene certificate, but this is not essential and will be paid for by the organisation as needed. You also need to have an understanding and passion for quality food and ingredients. Experience in a professional kitchen is desirable but not essential as full training will be given. You also need to demonstrate a strong sense of personal hygiene and an understanding of the need for strict hygiene controls in the kitchen.

In return for your time and commitment as a volunteer, The Playpen will provide a full induction and any other relevant training required (for example first aid training, REHIS elementary food hygeine). You will also be put through your PVG (Disclosure Scotland) membership.

You will be fully refunded for travel on the day of travel or within 7 days, on presentation of receipt/ticket. If you are volunteering for a full day, you will also be entitled to lunch from the cafe menu, up to the value of £5 per day. The two venues are 3.7 miles apart. Some travel between the two venues on any given day may be required. The use of public transport or a personal vehicle is preferred. Reimbursement for taxis could be considered dependent on distance from the business.

Organisation aims and objectives

‘The Playpen’ is a drop-in cafe and playroom for children aged 5 and under, based in Muckhart Coronation Hall every Friday and Crook of Devon village hall on Tuesdays. Operating as a not-for-profit social enterprise, it is overseen by a manager with the support of a group of community volunteers. Opening hours are 9:30am to 4:30pm and there is a small admission fee for children which allows for limitless stay-and-play. Parents and carers can arrive and leave with their children as and when it suits them. Come for 30 minutes or stay through lunch and on into the afternoon. We are here to help you find a local outlet for those energetic little munchkins and some adult company for yourself whenever you need it. The Playpen aims to provide a safe and fun environment for children to play, learn and socialise with a variety of fun and educational toys and activities. Importantly, we also aim to provide a comfortable, friendly and relaxing place for parents and carers too, where they can meet, consume quality caffeinated drinks, quaff delicious cakes or pull out their laptop to work on that important work assignment or just surf the net – with no questions or judgement from us. Looking after tiny humans is hard. Let us help you make your day that little bit easier.
