Description

Meal Makers is a community food-sharing project. Volunteers cook an extra portion of their meal to share with an older neighbour who would appreciate some home-cooking.

Meal Makers is a local neighbourhood food-sharing project that connects people who love cooking and who are happy to share an extra portion of home cooked food with an older neighbour (or “diner”) who would appreciate a freshly prepared meal and a friendly chat.
Meals can be shared once a week, once a fortnight or every now and then, at times to suit. It is designed to be a flexible volunteering opportunity based on an everyday activity. Cooks can select a diner that lives at a convenient distance and with similar taste in food via the Meal Makers website. Once paired with a nearby diner, cooks then arrange meals directly. They are asked to log meals on the site after they have been shared, and cooks can contact Meal Makers staff at any time with questions or problems.

Organisation aims and objectives

Our aim is to support older people to live independently at home by helping to reduce food poverty and malnutrition, improve diets and combat social isolation by breaking down the barriers that lead to loneliness. We are also hoping that the project will help to strengthen connections within communities and provide a flexible way for people to volunteer their time and skills locally in a way which suits them.

Restrictions

There are no restrictions on who can be a cook, although if the cook is under 18, parental permission and supervision is required.
Experience required: No formal cooking qualifications are required, but volunteers must have, at the very least, basic home cooking skills. Cooks must complete an online food hygiene questionnaire and a PVG check before being accepted as a Meal Maker.
Travel details: Volunter meal makers will be matched with someone in their local area.
