Volunteers help older people in Berwickshire and Kelso who come to our befriending groups. The groups meet in Coldstream and Eyemouth.

What do volunteer group befrienders do?
Take part in activities at the groups.
Chat to the older people attending the group.
Help the BeFriend Project Worker to get activities set
Help to clear up after the group.
Come to training.
Come to supervision sessions and team meetings.
Follow the rules of BeFriend.

Will it cost me anything?
We will pay you back for any petrol you use getting to the group or any bus fares.

Organisation aims and objectives

Berwickshire Housing Association (BHA) is a "not-for-profit" Industrial and Provident Society registered with the Scottish Housing Regulator. It is a Registered Social Landlord (RSL) with a current stock of approximately 1740 houses located throughout Berwickshire and Berwick-upon-Tweed. BHA’s registered office is located in Duns, it delivers housing services from here along with its two other local offices in Eyemouth and Coldstream giving its customers easy access to a full range of services. Founded in people and property, BHA seeks to become the first choice in the provision and management of affordable housing and related services. It is committed to producing a beneficial impact on people's lives in everything it does. Berwickshire Housing Association is also committed to Quality and has achieved a number of Quality Management accreditations including Investors in People, Quality Guild, Scottish Housing Regulator Inspection self assessment.










2 hours per week. There is a 3 month trial period.


Volunteers should be free to work with older adults who might be vulnerable.
Experience required: Volunteers should be: Friendly, patient and caring. Be able to talk to people. Be able to listen to people. Be able to turn up on time. Understand confidentiality. Expenses details: Expenses are available for refreshments taken while volunteering.
Taster available: Yes
Training details: 2 half day induction sessions. Then dementia awareness and safeguarding training at a later date. Ongoing opportunities to attend other sessions. Recruitment; Volunteers fill in a simple application form. If you need help with this please ask. Volunteers give 2 references and come to a short interview. There is a 3 month trial period.
