Description

Intandem, Scotland’s mentoring programme for young people, brings together vulnerable young people with a mentor to build a consistent and trusting relationship, and improve their chances in life. The Scottish Government has appointed Inspiring Scotland to lead the development of the intandem programme. Move On are responsible for delivering the service in the Lothians and, in partnership with YMCA Edinburgh, the City of Edinburgh.

We’re looking for enthusiastic and open-minded adults from all walks of life to volunteer to work with children and young people aged 8 - 14 who are looked after at home. You’ll be working on a one to one basis with the young person, using your own life experiences and skills to encourage them to achieve their goals.

Full training will be given, and once you're matched with a young person we'll expect you to be committed to them for at least a year.

Organisation aims and objectives

Move On is an organisation which works with vulnerable young people and those affected by homelessness. We offer a range of services providing advice, training, guidance and support enabling vulnerable young people and those affected by homelessness to unlock their potential and achieve a range of positive outcomes. These positive outcomes include; securing or progressing towards a job, accessing and sustaining a home, building confidence, growing support networks and increasing life skills.

Restrictions

Experience required: No particular experience or skills are necessary - but a strong belief in the potential of young people is essential.
Travel details: Locations vary across Midlothian. You’ll meet the child or young person in their home or our and about in the community. Having access to a car would be an advantage but is not essential.
Minimum age: 18

Support

Expenses paid: Yes
Expenses details: Volunteers will be given a float (which can be ‘topped up’ on request) to cover all public transport and activity costs. Mentors can also claim back any car mileage incurred by completing a car mileage form.
Training details: All volunteer mentors will go through an initial, comprehensive training programme, spread across five consecutive Saturdays. The next programme will take place in our central Edinburgh office, between 10am and 4pm, from 28th October until 25th November. We’ll be there to provide support whenever you need us, and will be in regular contact with you. When matched to a mentee for the first time, mentors will meet with the mentee and Move On’s Senior Development Worker to establish specific aims and goals of the mentorship. The Senior Development Worker will meet up with mentor and mentee on a regular basis to review progress and provide support.
