Computer Buddy

Help others join the digital world by passing on your computer skills. You do not have to be a whizz kid. Many of our clients have very little or no computer experience. Many just want to set up an email or do some internet shopping. Or you could help someone with job searching.
Buddies may be asked to help the learner to use their own devices including tablets, ipads, laptops.

Organisation aims and objectives

East Lothian Council Library Service is a major community and educational facility whose purpose is to safeguard, promote and improve the social, economic, environmental and democratic well-being of the people of East Lothian through enabling them to gain unbiased access to books, information, knowledge and works of creative imagination which will: - encourage their active participation in cultural, democratic and economic activites - enable them to participate in educational development through formal and informal programmes - assist them to make positive use of their leisure time. - promote reading and literacy. - encourage the use of information and an awareness of it's value.










1 hour per week in batches of 6 weeks. Once matched, buddy's and learners pick a day and time most suitable to them.


Experience required: Knowledge of ICT to help a new device user practice their skills such as basic word processing, email and internet. Tutoring skills, communication skills, people skills. It would be beneficial for the volunteer to have patience, self-confidence, ability to work on own initiative, and an interest in supporting older people. Buddy's may be asked to help the learner to use their own devices including tablets, ipads, laptops. Confidence using these devices is important.
Travel details: Travel from home to library is required.

Training details: An interview is held with the buddy coordinator who explains the role in full. Additional training sessions are held with other volunteers to promote new resources etc.
