Shetland Conservation Volunteer

Description

The Shetland Conservation Volunteers is a RSPB run team of enthusiastic volunteers who deliver practical conservation work in Shetland for environmental and community benefit. An ongoing programme of activities will be proposed, with an aim of a day of action every month in spring and summer.
Tasks could include infrastructure maintenance at RSPB reserves and providing help to local projects such as weeding, pruning and planting in community gardens.
There is no minimum commitment, volunteers can take part in one or more projects. This is an opportunity to learn and share skills, join a friendly team and actively contribute to protecting Shetland's environment.
This opportunity is seasonal and will be dependent on guidance around COVID-19 for 2020/2021

Restrictions

Under 18s: RSPB Young Volunteer Parental consent / guardian form required. Over 75s RSPB Over 75s Insurance declaration form required.
Experience required: An interest in wildlife and conservation. A willingness to undertake manual work outdoors. No previous experience or qualification needed.
Travel details: Various locations throughout Shetland.

South Haugh Conservation Day Volunteer

This conservation opportunity takes place every other Thursday, predominantly at South Haugh and occasionally at Low Parks, Udston & Glenlee Woods and Westburn. The volunteers will be undertaking a series of conservation tasks including woodland management, removal of invasive plant species, tree thinning, litter picking, path maintenance and much more. Mauldslie Woods Conservation Volunteer

Love being outdoors? Love your local woodland? Join the Mauldslie Woods Volunteering Team. Come along and carry out a variety of practical woodland conservation and management tasks, whilst having fun, learning new skills and meeting new people. Native Tree Nursery work

Eadha is one of Scotland's leading Aspen conservation charities. Aspen is a rare native tree but one which is potentially very useful and productive. Aspen rarely sets seed so propagating it is challenging. We survey the remote areas of the country to find surviving trees from which we then extract root cuttings for propagation. We then use a specialised lab to generate planting stock using tissue culture methods. They supply us with small plants which we pot up and grow on in our nursery. Aspen supports a more wildlife than any other tree and we develop woodland projects into which it can be planted. We are also growing other native trees and wildflowers. We are looking for volunteers to help us in our nursery at Bishopton to help with propagation. pot on the aspen trees. Gardening Volunteer

Following a four-year refurbishment, we opened our brand-new museum exhibition, shop, and café in July 2021. This is an exciting time to join us as we welcome visitors into the new museum for the 2022 season. The gardening volunteers are a friendly team of volunteers who work all year round to maintain the extensive gardens around the David Livingstone Birthplace. They play an important role in making the grounds accessible, attractive, and enjoyable for the wide range of people that visit the grounds. Key activities include grass cutting, weeding, hedge trimming, tidying the grounds, planting, and leaf clearance.
