Meal Makers is a local neighbourhood food-sharing project that connects people with a love for cooking who are happy to share an extra portion of home cooked food with an older neighbour (or “diner”) who might be unable or lack the motivation to prepare a meal for themselves. Meals can be shared once a week, once a fortnight or every now and then, at times to suit. It is designed to be a flexible volunteering opportunity based on an everyday activity.
We do our best to match our volunteers with a like-minded neighbour (similar hobbies, interests and dietary requirements) so that both the cook and diner get the most from their Meal Makers experience; we do find that the volunteers benefit from participating just as much as the older person who receives the meal.
Once paired with a diner, cooks then arrange meals directly with them at a time that is convenient for both. The Meal Makers team will be in constant communication with the cooks and diners to ensure that both parties are enjoying the experience. We have regular check-in calls and are always on hand to provide support when necessary.
Our aim is to support older people to live independently at home by helping to reduce food poverty and malnutrition, improve diets and combat social isolation by breaking down the barriers that lead to loneliness. We are also hoping that the project will help to strengthen connections within communities and provide a flexible way for people to volunteer their time and skills locally in a way which suits them.
There are no restrictions on who can be a cook, although if the cook is under 18, parental permission and supervision is required.
Experience required: No formal cooking qualifications are required, but volunteers must have, at the very least, basic home cooking skills. Cooks must complete an online food hygiene questionnaire and a PVG check before being accepted as a Meal Maker.
Travel details: Volunter meal makers will be matched with someone in their local area.
