Driver (East Renfrewshire)

  • VO66090

Drivers collect the same older guest/s each month and take them to a different local host's home where they all enjoy an afternoon tea party. There are usually three to five drivers in a group and there are sometimes also one or two reserve drivers to cover for holidays and emergencies.

We ask our drivers to commit to three to four hours one Sunday a month and to contact their older guest/s a few days before the monthly tea party to make sure they know when they are going to pick them up.

Organisation aims and objectives

Contact the Elderly is a national charity and organises monthly Sunday afternoon tea parties for people over 75 who live alone with little or no support from family and friends. One Sunday afternoon a month volunteers use their car to take older members to and from a volunteer host’s home for tea, cake and companionship. Hosts take it in turn to welcome the small group of older people and volunteer drivers into their home for a few hours.

Volunteers will be working with potentially vulnerable adults so must have full, clean driving licence and must complete a PVG check.
Experience required: No specific experience. A willingness to be sociable in a group and engage with our guests as well as a friendly and helpful attitude which will contribute to the smooth running of the tea party is desirable.
Travel details: Various locations. Drivers will travel to tea party hosts homes across the local area using their own cars to transport the guests.
Minimum age: 17

Training details: Volunteers will receive support from the organisation locally with access to members of staff as well as a support network of volunteers on social media.
