Volunteer Drivers

Description

The volunteer drivers will use their own car to collect 1-2 people just one Sunday afternoon each month. They will collect the same older guest from their home, driving them to their host's home to spend a couple of hours together for tea before returning home. Drivers are not required to do any lifting only assisting with a steadying arm. Regular drivers are responsible for the monthly contact with their older guests, reminding them of the date and checking their attendance. If you are not able to drive every month, you can also volunteer as a reserve driver to cover any gaps when regular drivers are not available. Although the tea party hosts may change, drivers remain the same, which means that over the months and years, acquaintances turn into friends and loneliness is replaced by companionship.

Organisation aims and objectives

Reengage (formerly Contact the Elderly) is a national charity and organises monthly Sunday afternoon tea parties for people over 75 who live alone with little or no support from family and friends. One Sunday afternoon a month volunteers use their car to take older members to and from a volunteer host’s home for tea, cake and companionship. Hosts take it in turn to welcome the small group of older people and volunteer drivers into their home for a few hours.
