Veterans Mentor - Therapeutic Gardening

  • VO65417

Volunteering at DTG will involve working with veterans under the guidance of Horticultural Therapy Staff during gardening sessions. You will be expected to reinforce positive lifestyle messages within the therapeutic programme and support veterans during their therapeutic sessions, including maintaining a tidy and secure working environment. We are keen that our volunteers support other therapeutic activities such as cooking, when appropriately qualified/ trained.

Our volunteers are important to provide positive civilian role models for veterans and where necessary, may be asked to support veterans on excursions from the garden site. All volunteers will be supported by staff and debriefed after each session. This will allow time to report any concerns regarding the veterans’ behaviour or mental health to HT staff.

This role presents a good opportunity to develop skills and experience in supporting people with mental health problems whilst learning about therapeutic gardening. We can offer training in First Aid and food handling. We will provide DBS clearance.

Organisation aims and objectives

Dundee Therapy Garden is a mental health charity providing Horticultural Therapy to veterans of the Armed Forces and Uniformed Services. We use gardening activities to facilitate improvements in mental and physical health and social functioning. We work from a purpose built site in Dudhope Park. Many volunteers are engaged in working directly with veterans but many other opportunities are also available.

We ask that volunteers give a regular commitment to allow continuity for the veterans. The minimum would be half a day per week. We run sessions four days a week and a volunteer would be welcome to support as many days as they would like. We do not generally work weekends

We hope to make it compatible in the near future. Unfortunately, we are unable to allow anyone under the age of 18 into sessions with veterans although they may help in others ways.
Experience required: Must be a people person! Gardening or knowledge of military culture would be helpful, but is not essential.
Travel details: The old bowling green, Dudhope Park. (St Mary’s Place entrance) The site is located within Dudhope park, Dundee and is an easy walking distance from the city centre. Parking is available on St Mary’s Place, but DTG is unable to reimburse train and bus fares.
Minimum age: 18

Taster details: We allow a four week introductory period to allow volunteers to get to know the staff, veterans and garden. Working in a mental health setting can be challenging and we are keen that our volunteers are happy and comfortable before committing longer term.
Training details: Volunteers will have an introductory session accompanied by staff. Ongoing training is on the job, however, particular topics can be covered in specific training sessions depending on the needs of the veterans and volunteers. Team debriefs after sessions allow feedback from and support to volunteers. There will be opportunities to have training in other areas (eg. First Aid and Food Handling).
Support: Named Contact For Volunteer,
Wheelchair Access/Disabled Access Toilet
