Description

This peer mentor role provides mentoring support from people with experience of M.E. to people living with M.E. or CFS. The aim is to give both people an opportunity to develop and enhance their skills and capacity to self manage. Mentors will need to be over 18 and live in Scotland and have the ability to focus on mentees needs. Training for mentors will be provided and one to one and group support will be available as well as further skills development. Action for M.E. will provide information on how to create, manage and sustain a mentoring relationship. Mentors need to be able to support the mentoring relationship and meet their mentee’s on a regular basis. If you want to use your experience of living with M.E. to support other people to manage their condition effectively and live a more fulfilling life then we want to hear from you.

Mentors will need to be over 18, based in Scotland and have:
• experience of living with M.E. for at least two years OR experience of caring for someone with M.E. for at least two years
• reached a stage in their illness where they have sufficient symptom stability to take on a mentoring role
• emotional readiness for the role and ability to focus constructively on the needs of mentees
• excellent listening and communication skills
• good interpersonal and social skills
• sensitivity
• ability to be flexible (as far as their condition allows)
• ability to successful complete the mentor training
• ability to provide reference/s
• ability to join the required Protection of Vulnerable Groups scheme.

Organisation aims and objectives

Action for M.E. works to end the ignorance, injustice and neglect faced by people with the chronic neurological condition myalgic encephalomyelitis (M.E.), sometimes diagnosed as chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS, or M.E./CFS).

The commitment can be flexible decided between mentor and mentee. Would require a few hours fortnight/month.

Restrictions

Travel details: Travel to meetings and the location will be agreed between the mentor and the person they are mentoring.

Expenses paid: Yes
Expenses details: Travel expenses for public transport and mileage at .40p per mile is available on receipt of tickets and paid into volunteer’s bank accounts each month.
Training details: Training will be five three-hour sessions spaced out with fortnightly gaps between. There will be one to one and group support meetings for mentors. Plus practice development sessions
