YOU can help young people and adults with Down’s syndrome in Aberdeen build their confidence and self-esteem, get out and about more doing the things they enjoy but also getting involved and taking part in new activities.
It is a fun, rewarding and inspirational role - ALL IT TAKES is a commitment to a couple of meet ups every month. We will provide out of pocket expenses, training and all the help you need to be a successful Mentor. Don’t just listen to us. Here’s what our volunteers say:-
"I have seen a real difference in Tommy's confidence, he chats away and has become very sociable, he even chatted up the barmaid on our last meet up." (feedback from volunteer).
"The two young woman I mentor, meet up every couple of weeks. They usually just like to go for a coffee and a chat or to the cinema but recently they have decided on trying a Zumba class. Down’s Syndrome Scotland promotes the interests of people with Down’s syndrome and their families in Scotland by influencing public policy and attitudes. We provide a range of services and activities to help those with Down’s syndrome reach their full potential.
Experience required: No experience necessary. Looking for people who are non-judgemental, friendly, organised, motivated and committed.
Travel details: Aberdeen area. Any travel whilst volunteering is reimbursed.
Minimum age: 18
Expenses paid: Yes
Expenses details: Expenses are paid monthly unless arranged otherwise. If using car, 45 p per mile is paid. Public transport is paid, receipts or tickets must be provided. Expenses sheets are completed by volunteers.
Training details: Good support and training is provided. Includes induction and relevant training opportunities during. Support meetings are every 8-12 weeks as well as support available over the telephone, via email and group meetings.
