Do you like to garden and build things? Would you like to learn about growing fruit and vegetables? Do you have a few hours free each week to develop The Heugh Community Growing Garden? We are in the early stages of developing the old Tranent Gasworks site on The Heugh into a community growing garden and a resource for the local community. We are looking for volunteers to help with rubbish clearing, tree-felling, ground digging, pathworks, building raised beds and growing.

Organisation aims and objectives

To support individuals and communities to engage with nature and deliver volunteer led solutions to help improve the environment. A community growing garden providing volunteers with space to learn about organic growing, healthy eating, recycling and sustainability while sharing skills and socialising to the wider community we offer a natural space for outdoor events, environmental workshops and training.










The opportunity currently takes place every Tuesday 10.30am-4.00pm and Wednesday 10.30am-4.00pm.


Access to the site is via a steep flight of steps which would be a struggle for anyone with limited mobility although we will be working on additional access later in the year.
Experience required: Everyone is welcome, no experience or skills needed, just a great opportunity to work, learn, help the local community and have fun too!
Travel details: This opportunity takes place in Tranent, East Lothian and is accessible by car, bus and on foot.

Taster available: Yes
Taster details: We can arrange an informal visit to the site and an introduction to other team members.
Training details: Tool safety talk and introduction to the site when you start volunteering and ongoing instruction and demonstrations of tools and activities.
