Breastfeeding Peer Support

Breastfeeding peer supporters will be trained and supported by midwives. There will be an initial 2 day training, which is based on UNICEF baby friendly breastfeeding management. Followed by supervision with a midwife, then support with midwife discussion. Breastfeeding peer supporters will be available to offer support and information to breastfeeding mothers in a variety of settings eg hospital, mothers' home and community groups.

Needs to have own experience of breastfeeding (peer support group). Strict adherence to confidentiality, Health and Safety and infection control policies. Liaison with midwives. Good communication skills, particularly listening skills. Non judgemental.
Experience required: Needs to have own experience of breastfeeding as this is a peer support group.
Travel details: Gilbert Bain Hospital, Lerwick / Breastfeeding mother's houses / community group settings. Travel by own transport / public transport
Minimum age: 16


Expenses paid: Yes
Expenses details: Yes - public transport rate via the hospital expenses system. Payment is made for travel to placement at public transport rates. Bus fares would be reimbursed.
Training details: Induction will be via corporate induction which will be 1 day. Moving and handling training 1/2 day, posture awareness for breastfeeding supporter 1/2 hr. Induction to the ward environment 2 hours. Support provided by midwives and health care assistant whilst volunteering.
