Ward Volunteer/Patient Helper

 Social and diversional activities to help patients have a more positive experience whilst in hospital e.g. games, reading, chatting
 Supporting the preparation and assisting of refreshments and at mealtimes
 Physical activities – accompanying patients for walks with the consent of nurse in charge - Competencies – Assessed by Physio or Occupational Therapist
 Assisting Occupational Therapists if required in rehabilitation activities
 Alerting nursing staff if you are concerned about the patient


 Never feel too busy to chat with patients or to join in patient activities
 Respect privacy when staff are dealing with a patient
 Any concerns re your volunteering role please speak to staff on the ward.
 If you cannot attend for volunteering please let the ward know as soon as possible
 Please advise the ward and the Voluntary Services Manager if you are no longer able to continue in your volunteer role.


Experience required: KEY ATTRIBUTES  Ability to work as part of a team  Able to understand the need for a safe environment  Able to understand need for confidentiality  Helpful and caring manner with a friendly disposition  Good listening and communication skills  Socialising skills and ability to encourage patients to participate
Travel details: Adult in-patient areas NHS Lothian Hospitals
Minimum age: 16
