Paths for All, the leading voice for the promotion of physical activity and walking in Scotland, is seeking an exceptional leader to steer the charity through an exciting journey of change. Our new Chair will see Paths for All establish an infrastructure supporting fundraising and income generation to help support walking programmes across Scotland as we deliver our ambitious ‘Step It Up’ strategy. As Scotland’s national walking charity our mission is to encourage the people of Scotland to be physically active through walking. We know that walking (whether on foot or with a wheelchair or mobility aid) makes a valuable contribution to our physical, mental and social health. This is why we champion national walking programmes in schools, workplaces and communities and work in partnership to increase levels of physical activity, by helping to create inclusive, safe and attractive environments for walking. The Chair will work with the Trustees and Senior Management Team to spearhead this mission, upholding Paths for All’s values and supporting the delivery of the strategy and new programmes that put walking at the heart of our communities across Scotland. They will ensure effective governance for the organisation, working closely with the Chief Executive Officer and other trustees to build relationships and collaborate to ensure success. The ideal candidate will have the following key experience: A strong and visible passion and commitment to our mission to support the people of Scotland to be physically active through walking. Experience as a trustee, ideally as a Chair. Experience of fundraising or income generation. The ability to demonstrate strategic leadership and strong inter-personal and relationship building skills. Experience leading organisations through periods of development and change. Ability to apply principles of good charity governance. Understanding of the third sector. Understanding and connections into the Scottish Government. Eligible to be a Director at Companies House About the Board Paths for All board meet on a quarterly basis held in-person and take place at the Barracks Conference Centre within an accessible building in a central location in Stirling. The venue is close to the railway station and has parking nearby. Our Quarterly Board meetings generally take place from 10:00am to 1:00pm, including lunch. In addition to the quarterly board meetings and AGM, we have a staffing and finance subgroup and an outcomes subgroup, both of which are led by the Chair and which meet online as and when required. In total, the Chair role requires an average time commitment of around 1-2 days per month, to allow for regular meetings with the Chief Executive Officer and attendance at relevant events in addition to Board meetings. Our fundraising groups are the local face of MDUK, raising vital funds and consistently raising the profile of the charity in order to reach more people and their families affected by a muscle wasting condition. Role Description : What you’ll get out of the role: • Meeting and working with new and inspiring people. • Developing your communications, fundraising, PR and organisational skills. • More experience to add to your CV. • Developing your leadership skills. • Making a difference to your local community by raising funds and the profile of MDUK in your community. • Having fun, sharing your enthusiasm and doing something new. • Guidance on fundraising, finance and health and safety. What you’ll be doing: • Planning, organising and promoting fundraising events and collections with other group/committee members. • Collecting funds on behalf of the charity and servicing collection tins. • Attending group meetings. • Acting as an ambassador for MDUK through building community networks and in talking enthusiastically about the work of the charity. • Giving presentations to community organisations / schools. • Distributing promotional leaflets for MDUK. • Collecting and delivering MDUK merchandise to local supporters. • Liaising with your local Regional Development Manager to keep up-to-date with MDUK local and national events and our future direction as well as sharing our successes. • Complying with legal requirements e.g. health & safety legislation for fundraising events and MDUK’s internal policies. • If you have an interest in finance or accounts: using these skills in keeping records of the group’s financial activities and overseeing the submission of monies and year end accounts in line with MDUK guidelines and keeping with the Charities Act. How we will support you: • Support from your local Regional Development Manager with guidance on fundraising, event organising, planning and finance. • Fundraising merchandise/materials supplied as appropriate. • Opportunities to meet and network with staff and fellow volunteers during the year. • Updates on the success of the team as well as MDUK’s campaigns, events, achievements and future direction. • We will provide any relevant training to give you confidence in presenting on behalf of MDUK, e.g. guidance on media work and press releases, photography of events and in written communications and thanking supporters. Skills and Experience required: • Organisational, communication and time management skills so you can work effectively with a wide range of people. • The ability to work well with staff and other volunteers as part of a team but also able to work on your own initiative. • Honesty, reliability, passion and enthusiasm. • An interest in muscle-wasting conditions and the services that MDUK provides and able to represent MDUK to members of the public. • Possible managing finances – numeric skills, book keeping skills and attention to detail. • Ability to respond proactively to new opportunities. • A welcoming, friendly manner. • Enthusiasm and commitment to supporting the work of MDUK. • To maintain and uphold the reputation and good name of the charity. • To listen to, and work co-operatively with paid members of staff and other volunteers – treating all with courtesy and respect. • To take reasonable care of your own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their acts or omissions. • To support the charity’s equal opportunities and diversity policy – helping to promote this to all our supporters. • To provide us with feedback on how we can improve your volunteering experience with the charity. • To inform us if your commitment to us, for any reason, can no longer continue.

Would you like to support someone through their cancer journey? Tayside Cancer Support offers a free, confidential, one-to-one befriending service for those affected by cancer in the Tayside area and help establish support groups which offer a valuable network for people facing a diagnosis of cancer either themselves or in a loved one. In addition, we provide specialist Mindfulness courses for anyone affected by cancer. Our volunteers are the key to the Charity’s success. Everyone has skills that can be put to good use! Marie Curie was a scientist who discovered radium and polonium, contributing to finding treatments for cancer. This work continues to inspire our charity's mission to help people and their families living with a terminal illness make the most of the time they have together by delivering expert care, emotional support and research. Marie Curie care for more than 40,000 terminally ill people in the UK a year. The services we offer include providing Nursing care in people’s own home including emotional support. Across the UK we have nine hospices which provide specialist care and support, in Scotland these are located in Edinburgh and Glasgow. Our support teams help anyone affected by terminal illness, online and over the phone. Whether someone needs practical support caring for their loved one, or emotional support once they’ve died, our teams are here to help. Become a voice at your college/university campus by helping to raise awareness and funds and encouraging others to support Marie Curie. This can be through fundraising activities, raising profile at student fairs and encouraging societies to get involved. Social skills, good communication skills, confident engaging with students, professional, organised, events experience (desirable). Active on social platforms can also benefit you in this role.
