Health Walk Leader - South Lanarkshire

  • VO57675

Description

Help others to become healthier and happier by leading our health walks. The walks are free, last no longer than an hour and go at a gentle pace. Apart from taking people on a walk, walk leaders will welcome new walkers, give route information (where, how long/ how far, hazards), encourage some social activity and deal with a bit of paperwork. Optional activities are assisting with promoting the walks. It is up to individual volunteers to decide how much they want to commit, but to ensure some continuity we would ask that you consider your availability for leading walks before doing the health walk leader training day.

We're looking for volunteers fairly urgently for the following walks, please get in touch if you can help:

Tuesday morning: Rutherglen
Tuesday morning: Chatelherault, short walk
Tuesday morning: Lesmahagow
Wednesday morning: Stonehouse
Wednesday morning: Symington
Friday morning Cambuslang:

Organisation aims and objectives

Get Walking Lanarkshire is the health walk project which spans across both North and South Lanarkshire Council areas. Health walks are free, short, friendly group walks for all ages and abilities and they are led by our trained volunteers. There are also opportunities for people to train as volunteer walk leaders themselves, helping local groups to take up walking and keep healthy. The project was launched in early 2014 to encourage more people to get outdoors and enjoy the many benefits of walking. Walking is the simplest way to include exercise into our daily lives, and with fantastic parks and paths across Lanarkshire, there’s plenty of places to enjoy a walk at your own pace. Regular physical activity has been shown to lower the risk of early death, help control weight and reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, depression, some types of cancer and a host of other conditions. It helps maintain good mental health, keeps your brain active and lowers the risk of hip fractures. Walking is a perfect start for people who wish to ease themselves in, and build up their fitness. It’s healthy, fun and free – and there’s no better time to start. For more information or to find out more about a walk near you, please contact the project co-ordinator on 01698 402077 / 07903 358424 or getwalkinglanarkshire@northlan.gov.uk.
