We are looking for friendly, outgoing and organised volunteers. This opportunity would suit people who enjoy talking to others, are able to listen and have a couple of hours free each week/fortnight that they could spend talking to an older person. Full training will be given and out-of-pocket expenses paid.
The aim of Food Train Friends is to improve the quality of life for our customers by providing them with a befriending service on a regular basis. Volunteers will provide a consistent and reliable support to help customers experience social interaction on a regular basis.

Due to increased demand for our services, Food Train Friends is currently looking for more adult befriending volunteers in Wigtownshire. Ideally, the befriender should have some spare time on their hands each week or fortnight to provide a befriending service to our elderly isolated and lonely people in these geographical areas by simply providing company, conversation and activities. We provide a 1-2-1 service , a telephone service and a group outing service for our customers. Full training, guidance and support will be provided to those interested. The ideal candidate is someone who has good life experiences and a sense of humour amongst other skills for this very worthwhile cause.

Befriending can be via home visits, group outings or telephone befriending

Organisation aims and objectives

One to one home visits and personal telephone calls which provide social contact and conversation to older people in need. Allows older person to talk to others. Helps to address loneliness and social isolation. Focus on personal and social welfare rather than their personal care. Can stay within person’s home or can go out of house for short walks, if possible. For people aged 65+ (strict criteria) and living in Dumfries & Galloway. Annual Fee £10.00 ( NB £12.00 from 1/8/13). Membership of Food Train also required £1.00pa. Transport costs - usually apply on outings

Restrictions

Due to the vulnerable nature of the client group all volunteers will be subject to an Enhanced Disclosure Scotland check.
Experience required: Friendliness, trustworthiness, patience, reliability, punctuality, organisation and good listening skills are all that is required.
Travel details: Days and evenings vary - not usually weekends. For group outings travel will mainly be in Dumfries & Galloway. Transport is provided for outings.
