Charity Trustee / Director of the Board

  • VO55028

Description

Shetland Link Up was set up to support adults in Shetland suffering/recovering from mental ill health and to prevent them from being socially isolated as a result. We run a drop-in service in central Lerwick plus occasional other activities. Our drop-in provides a safe, accepting environment for people to get out, meet up with and make friends and socialize. We also provide a light lunch. We have been supporting people for 24 years.
Shetland Link Up is a registered charity (SC02422) and a company limited by guarantee (SC0270360) and so has a Board of Directors/Charity Trustees who are responsible for the overall management and development of the organization. (Day to day administration is delegated to the coordinator). Our target is to have 50% current or ex service users and 50% others with an interest in mental health on the board.
Directors receive induction into the role and are asked to attend Voluntary Action Shetland's training on the roles and responsibilities of company trustees.
Directors are invited (but not compelled) to take part in fundraising and some activities.

Organisation aims and objectives

Link Up is a drop-in centre for adults of both genders who are experiencing or recovering from mental distress or mental illness. Most of our clients live alone and are at risk of social isolation. Our role is to befriend them and engage in social interaction. We play games (pool, scrabble, draughts, dominoes), have discussions (one-to-one and group) and share a meal together. Tea and coffee are available throughout the session.
