Description

The trustees hold Home-Start in trust for current and future beneficiaries by:
• providing leadership and direction within the ethos of Home-Start
• ensuring thethe organisation has a clear vision, mission and strategic direction
• being responsible for the effective performance and management of the the organisation
• ensuring the the organisation complies with legal and regulatory requirements, the objects of the the organisation, the governing documents including the Home-Start Handbook, the Home-Start Agreement and quality standards
• securing and guarding the the organisation’s assets and taking care of their security, deployment and proper application
• ensuring that the the organisation’s governance is of the highest possible standard
• undertaking an ambassadorial role for the the organisation
• appointing sub-committees and agreeing their terms of reference and membership.

Organisation aims and objectives

Home-Start East Fife have been supporting families across East Fife for over 30 years. Every year 20 - 30 trained volunteers support an average of 60 families with around 170 children. Home-Start East Fife has a staff team of four who work with the Board of Trustees to train and support volunteers so they in turn can support families. Support takes two forms: home-visiting and Family Support Groups. Home-visiting volunteers visit families in their own homes once a week to offer friendship and support, whether parents need an extra pair of hands, help to get out, or just some adult company and a listening ear. In this rural area of North East Fife, social isolation is one of the recurring reasons families are referred to us. Families are referred to us by health visitors, social workers, community psychiatric nurses and other local professionals, or parents can refer themselves. In addition to home-visiting volunteers, Home-Start East Fife runs three Family Support Groups, in Auchtermuchty, St Andrews and Cupar. The Family Support Groups are only for families referred to Home-Start East Fife. They provide a safe and stimulating environment for our parents and their pre-school children. Within the groups, our Family Support Group Co-ordinator and volunteers organise activities aimed at improving parenting skills and promoting positive interaction between parent and child and within their peer groups. Family Support Groups also provide a supportive environment and information exchange for parents experiencing difficulties. The children are given healthy snacks, and have access to educational toys and an environment that allows for physical activity.

Restrictions

Experience required: People with management, committee, financial experience. People with knowledge of the voluntary sector. Anyone interested in assisting us in achieving our aims.
Travel details: Committee meetings take place at Home-Start East Fife offices in St Andrews approximately every six weeks; travel to and from committee meetings can be reimbursed.

Expenses details: Monthly expenses form to be completed and public transport costs reimbursed or national rate for car usage
Training details: Volunteer trustees can attend the Course of Preparation which runs for approximately 40 hours – usually one day per week for 8 weeks. There is also a Trustee Information pack available

This is an opportunity to become involved in the foundation and development of a new Home-Start charity in Dumfries. Home-Start is an organisation whose volunteers offer regular support, friendship and practical help to young families under stress in their own homes, or as groups, and helping to prevent family crisis or breakdown. More information is available at https://www.home-start.org.uk/about-us Substantial financial support has been given by the Wm. Grant Foundation for setting up a Home-Start in Dumfries, and while this is currently being managed by the established Home-Start Wigtownshire charity, the plan is to recruit a board of trustees for Dumfries and become an independent charity within a year. This year we have taken an office in central Dumfries and employed a Senior Coordinator who is already establishing contacts within local agencies involved in supporting families. We also have three volunteers in training, who will be the first of a larger group which will support young families in the wider community. What we now need is a Board of Trustees to provide continuing support and guidance at a local level. Other than the ability to identify with the objectives of Home-Start and commitment to furthering these, no special requirements are necessary to be considered as a board member, although a background in financial management or law would be an additional bonus.

We are open to applications from individuals who have a general interest in our work and are keen to make a difference, but specific skills in relation to HR and legal issues would be particularly welcome Board meetings take place six times a year and last between one and two hours, starting at 530pm on Thursday’s. Members typically also join one of four sub-groups (Operational, HR, Finance, Policy and Compliance) which meet four times a year. Currently, the meetings take place online via zoom.

We are seeking Trustees to join our Board, and in particular someone to take up the role of Secretary. We also have opportunities for a Trustee to lead our Fundraising Team (assisted by our parent group) A Trustee of Tweedbank Early Learners will work with other trustees, the nursery management team, staff members and volunteers to ensure the charity is carrying out its intended purpose which is to provide the highest quality Early Learning and Childcare for children and families in our local and wider community. The role of the Board is to safeguard and promote the Vision, Values and Aims of Tweedbank Early Learners (SCIO) to determine the strategy and structure of the charity, and to ensure that it operates in an effective, responsible and accountable manner We are looking for caring, dynamic and committed individuals, who will help to drive our charity forwards. Both challenging and rewarding in equal measure, our trustee roles will provide you with an opportunity to support a local charity and really make a difference.
